By Nichola Groom, Reuters
NEW YORK (Jan. 15) - Residents of the Northeast shivered through a severe blast of Arctic air and snow on Thursday, with temperatures from New York to Maine expected to drop to near-record lows by evening.
A five-inch blanket of snow grounded more than 100 flights at New York City airports and canceled school for children in parts of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. As much as 10 inches of snow fell in Michigan.
In New York, icy winds were expected to make it feel like 30 degrees below zero Fahrenheit by Thursday night. Excluding the wind chill, temperatures were expected to reach 2 degrees Fahrenheit, just shy of a 1957 record low of zero degrees Fahrenheit.
By early morning on Thursday, New York had already logged 970 complaints about inadequate heating, according to the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development.
New York's 1,300 snowplows and 350 salt spreaders were working to clear streets but extreme temperatures meant streets could quickly refreeze.
''We have to rely on the public to use extreme caution,'' New York Sanitation Department spokesman Keith Mellis said.
In Maine, Gov. John Baldacci declared a civil emergency as the National Weather Service in Caribou said icy winds of up to 25 mph could make it feel like 60 degrees below zero Fahrenheit through Friday morning.
Meteorologists on New Hampshire's Mount Washington, home to the highest wind speed ever clocked on Earth, said they expect a 70-year-old record to fall within the next 24 hours.
Temperatures at the Mount Washington Observatory, perched atop the highest peak in the northeastern United States, could drop below the record low of minus 47 F set on Jan. 29, 1934.
''We could conceivably hit 50 below zero Friday morning,'' said meteorologist Tim Markle, one of two weather observers stationed at the 6,288-foot summit this week.
The peak's weather observers were being extra careful when venturing outside to make their hourly observations, because exposed flesh can freeze in less a minute in such weather.
The eye-watering cold kept the streets of Manchester, New Hampshire, largely pedestrian-free on Thursday, but politicians were still campaigning for the state's first-in-the-nation presidential primary election on Jan. 27.
Perhaps hardest hit were the small knots of young volunteers detailed to show up, cheer and wave signs on the sidewalks outside the various candidates' campaign stops to provide an energetic backdrop for the television cameras.
But with the Democratic nominating race, at least, heating up, the rival camps made clear they could expect no reprieve.
''Our volunteers are taking a special pride in going outside and freezing their butts off for John Kerry,'' insisted Kerry campaign spokesman Mark Kornblau.

It's so cold I swear my contacts froze to my eyes. And that was just walking from the house to the car.

You know... Kansas was bitter cold this time last year. However, right now, I can be outside with only a t-shirt and be slightly uncomfortable.

Hiker Found Dead in New Hampshire
By TANIA FUENTEZ, AP
NEW YORK (Jan. 16) - A blustery snowstorm combined with painfully cold arctic air descended on the Northeast on Thursday, trapping New York-bound ferries in the ice, grounding hundreds of flights and prompting warnings to bundle up from Maine to Pennsylvania.
Fine, powdery snow fell across much of the region, with the mercury dipping into the single digits in many places and 20 and 30 degrees below zero in others - a brutal combination that closed schools, disabled car batteries, caused fender-benders and forced even ski resorts to close.
In Yonkers, N.Y., retired construction worker Thomas Robbins, 66, pulled over to the side of the slippery Bronx River Parkway. ''Mostly I'm resting my hands,'' he said. ''I'm gripping the wheel so tight because I'm afraid of skidding.''
Some ferries linking New Jersey and New York City were iced in, forcing commuters to hop buses or find some other way to work. Two New York-area airports, La Guardia and Newark Liberty, reported more than 200 flights canceled.
''Any exposed skin can freeze in less than 30 minutes,'' warned Scott Reynolds, a National Weather Service forecaster in New York City.
A hiker was found dead in New Hampshire's White Mountains, where temperatures fell to minus 44 and the wind chill approached minus 100. Friends said the middle-aged man had been outdoors since Monday.
He was well-equipped, including a tent and a stove, but ''in these extreme temperatures, it's not always going to cut it,'' said Fish and Game Department Lt. Robert Bryant.
The bitter cold could worsen Friday, leading to concerns about blackouts.
Vermont's governor and power companies in Connecticut warned that brief rolling blackouts might occur in a few places in southern New England, although none were needed as demand began to drop Thursday night. Utilities blamed the electricity shortage on high customer demand, but Gov. James Douglas said the problem was a lack of natural gas needed to run power plants.
Philadelphia got 4 inches of snow and reached a high temperature of 22, but the mercury was expected to drop to zero for the first time in a decade Thursday night.
Boston saw only a dusting of snow, but Harwich, Mass., on Cape Cod received 4 inches. The low for Boston came in at minus 4.
New York City reached a high of just 14 degrees and got 5 inches of snow before it tapered off to flurries at midmorning. With a wind chill of 20 below zero in the forecast for Thursday night, the city planned to search the streets for homeless people and bring those in danger indoors - against their will, if necessary.
In Uxbridge, Mass., near Worcester, school buses had trouble running because the cold caused their diesel fuel to congeal. School officials finally told parents to keep their children home Thursday.
More than 250 Massachusetts districts and schools decided to close Friday, joining hundreds of others throughout the region.
Maine Gov. John Baldacci declared a civil emergency, waiving certain trucking regulations so fuel oil delivery drivers could work overtime. The temperature hit 31 below at Ninemile Bridge.
Big Rock ski resort in Maine closed for a second straight day. General manager Tim Prather said it was minus 12 by midday, which felt like 37 below with the wind. ''That's pretty brutal when you're going up a lift,'' he said.
In Whitefield, N.H., the temperature dipped as low as 35 degrees below zero. In Watertown, N.Y., it was minus 31, with a wind chill of minus 46.
All of upstate New York fell under a wind-chill warning Thursday night for readings as low as minus 50.
Full-service gas stations that let drivers stay nice and warm reported booming business in New Hampshire.
National Weather Service meteorologist Tony Lacroix said weekend temperatures in New Hampshire are expected to climb into the 20s.
''Golly, that's a heat wave,'' he said.

I refuse to go outside unless the car has been warming at least an hour, I went out w/ my hair damp, and my hat froze to my head. This is incredible,

It felt like spring to me around Christmas, there again, I went into hospital Christmas Day and I don't know what the weather was like after then
Recently, it's been getting too cold to snow here, so I'd probably agree with you.
Although we did have a good 3 inches in 3 hours a few days ago

Its also extremely cold in Pittsburgh, actually it wasnt so bad yesterday, but on Friday it was too cold. I mean there is a difference between cold and too cold. They had to give us a Two Hour Delay for school. Well...at least this cold weather is good for something.
