Sun Dec 07, 2003 3:14 pm How about a Trek series from a Doctor's point of view? |
|
Hi everyone,
Some of the best Trek episodes ever have been about the various doctors in the series from McCoy to Crusher to Pulaski (she was okay) to Bashir to The Doctor. I have enjoyed very much episodes focusing on a medical point of view.
So, how about a Trek series in the future with a medical theme? I've been thinking about this idea for a long time but almost feel stupid to mention it.
It could be set perhaps about twenty or thirty years after TNG, DSN & Voyager. It would retain some of Roddenberry's optimistic vision but could also be a very gritty and dark show.
It would be set during a major conflict between Starfleet and a new and deadly alien race. The show would focus on a Medical Starship which docks at a DSN-like station which is home to Starfleet Doctors. Each week, we'd see various stories with ethical dilemmas, philisophical stories and plenty of action when it was necessary.
I know, I know, stupid idea but quite frankly, I'm not too impressed with Enterprise and I feel that any future Star Trek series definitely needs to be something different-very different.
Let me know your thoughts and I'd also be interested to hear from those who don't like my idea as it's always interesting to read opposing views.

I've stole nothing. I haven't seen that episode. I haven't even seen much of DSN and Voyager-nor Enterprise. I'm still catching up on them and in the case of Voyager, I'm waiting for the season boxsets.
I came up with the idea because I have enjoyed some of the stories about Starfleet doctors and I happen to enjoy medical shows such as Holby City and E.R.
A medical Trek show would at least be something different.

I'll certainly give it a try miss7. I've only seen two and a half seasons of Voyager and am anxious to see more, especially season 7 which I hear is fantastic.

I think this would be a great idea.
I've considered something like this for a book series, "Casefiles from Starfleet Medical." This series instead of having a set character group would be individual, stand-alone stories, not unlike "The Lost Era" series. Each story would be "submitted" by various members of Starfleet Medical. Any of the MDs from Phlox to The Doctor could have a "submission" in the files. I think it would be a good place to introduce new charaters or have one-time characters.

I was quite skeptical about the whole idea when I first read the title, but having an open mind as soon as I read what you proposed it actually sounds really good. I enjoyed watching ER and DS9 (which of course had the Dominion War) a lot .. so it's kinda combining those two and adding a bit more, which in my view could potentially be fantastic!

It'd certainly be interesting. Maybe that's what Trek needs, a new focus--instead of on the Captain, perhaps on another crew member.

I'm glad there's some enthusiasm for this idea. I came forward with the idea because I was trying to think of a fresh new concept for a potential future Trek series.
For those that like the idea, what time period would you like to see it set in? Before or after one of the Trek shows. Or maybe in the middle.

It sounds like a very interesting idea. I think it could work.
But I doubt paramount has a new trek series in mind right now

A new doctor themed Star Trek series. Sounds cool. It could be like the ER series, where people ad/or aliens come in that need immediate medical attention. The doctors might even have to go on planetary missions every now and then.

well, i don't like to stand out, but i think i'm gonna have to disagree. i'm also not too impressed with enterprise, and a new series MIGHT be good, but one from just the view of the doctor, it would get really old fast. the star trek series aren't always about the captain. they get points fo view from all the main cast. some episodes may focus mainly on the captain, but they also focus on the Doctor or the Engineer. the only reason it's usually about the captain is b/c he/she is incharge of the entire crew and that person has to make the major decision on whether the ship is destroyed or not.
To tell you the truth, i think that people are running out of ideas for the star trek series. in TOS they were exploring the galaxy finding out about aliens and that kind of thing. in TNG, they were just kinda following the same lines, but it was several years later, and their technology was more advanced. DS9 was different b/c they were on a station, and they had the worm hole, discovering new territory. Voyager was sent to the other side of the galaxy and was exploring the delta quadrant. the thing that all these series have in common, was that they were exploring new areas of the galaxy. now Enterprise is exploring the same thing that we've already seen in TOS and TNG. they are exploring the same part of the galaxy...and honestly, its way too much like a soap opera. i get really bored. i would have been happy if they left it at voyager for a couple of decades.
but anywayz, yeah. that's my thought on that.

Never be afraid to stand out and disagree, my friend. Life would be boring if we sat around agreeing with each other about movies, TV and music.
Whilst it is conceivable that a medical Trek series could run out of steam, I could definitely envision it as a series of novels.

So you're saying something like a medical ship, like...MASH. Hey, that's a great idea.
