Kirk fits the hero archetype mold better, although, Picard kind of represents that old world sea faring explorer (with just a dash of elizibethian gay player, not that its a bad thing )

Kirks crew gained confidence just by looking at him. Picards went blind looking at him.

Dax, did you read my post above? If Picard is so "smart" then why didnt he wait til they were all ready and keep everyone safe? Maybe he just wanted more credit??? Or maybe he just isnt logical, or both?

How about this:

Data: 50000 Romulan Warbirds just decloaked off our Port bow.

Picard: Hail the lead vessel.

Worf: No response, they are charging weapons.

Picard: Ahhhhh!!!!!! Number One you have The Bridge, I'm heading for my Ready Room!

Kirk is the hard man of the Federation, Picard is the peace-loving hero.

i think both are evenly matched. both defied orders, only 1 got demoted in rank... Kirk. both make peace where it is needed and both kick some serious as* whenever posible

Only one had the guts enough to obey orders enough to get reduced in rank. I don't think Picard would have sacrificed his Captaincy. What Kirk did was selfless.

I know, but Picard was never an Admiral, so I couldn't very well say "lose his Admiralty", now could I? It was just a basis of comparison.

" at times " being the key word. Picard was smart all the time.he made sure his decisions were rational and when he need help, he sought it

I just watched several TNG episodes this past week, and I noticed something. Picard rarely acted without first looking to Riker. Kirk would sometimes ask Spock, but he wasn't as dependant upon him as Picard was Riker. Kirk could think on his feet, Picard would have to sit down and think, and work out all of the angles before he could act; and of course, by then, he'd be dead.

In only one episode did Kirk ever make an irrational decision, to chase the cloud creature, and he took all the blame for that. Picard was king of passing the buck.
