While at work today, my friend and I were on the discussion of PI. Not cherry, or apple, both would be good about now, but the number.

So, any idea how big that number is?

From the top of our heads, it was something like 2 to the 14569276 power.

Any ideas?

Isn't it that number that starts 3.14 and has an infinite amount of numbers after that?

3.141592653587932384626433832795..........

Pi isn't all that large of a number. It is roughly 3.14, but there are an infinate number of decimal places beyond 3.14. Like the square root of three.

The big deal about Pi is that those infinate places past the decimal are totally random, unlike the square root of 3, which can be predicted to go on as 0.33333333 and so on, forever repeating as 3. Pi on the other hand cannot be predicted.

.3 repeating is not the square root of three, it is one third.

The square root is approximately 1.732050808

It cannot be predicted, but it can be calculated.

The word you are thinking of here is pattern. It has no pattern, also the defining aspect of one third is that it can be put into fraction form. Pi cannot, because it is an irrational number. 1/3 is.
