Sat May 31, 2003 11:48 am How would they self destruct if... |
|
How would they initiate the auto distruct sequence if someone ejected the warp core? because the ship is distroyed by the warp core overloading

Three Answers
1) They wouldn't
2) Overload the fusion reactor, sending out surges throughout the ship
OR
3) Detonate Torpedoes Inside

Actually, the auto destruct sequence is caused by an uncontrolled matter/antimatter reaction. The warp core is used to funnel the matter and antimatter in a typical autodestruct sequence, but is mostly unnecessary to the process overall. The crew could still create a m/a reation without the core.

They could, but they would have to dump the storage tanks together....

Well, they could combine the a/am from the storage tanks.

What difference does it make? The end result is the same. Also, they would probably transport the m/a together if they couldn't route it through the EPS conduits....

Matter and Anti-matter aren't transported through the EPS relay, or are they. Hmmmm, *checks manuals*

I bet either way that because they are a ship of the federation that they couldn't control the self destruct anyways......the council would to get rid of any nasty secrets the Federation might be hiding.

Heh. All those, "secret documents". They could claim every log about them, just happened to be on a ship........

How true. The best way to make information disappear is by making the source of the information disappear.

But how could a forcefield contain antimatter though?
a force field is made of energy and thats made of some matter and if matter contacts antimatter "KABOOM"

the force field is not made of matter it is made of energy and if they dumped the warp core they would detonate all photon and quantum torpedoes activate the normal autodestruct explosives and if they still have antimatter pods release all safety interlocks on the matter and antimater pods to destroy the ship.

they could just overload the engines, because the engines are filled with antimater, the core just acts as the channel, think of it like antimater is the water and the warp core is the funnel

Arg. Must stop browsing unfamiliar forums in the early hours of the morning. It gives me headaches.
Anyway.
There are two modes of auto-destruct onboard standard Federation starships. The first is a controlled overload of both the fusion reactors and the warp drive, causing a rather nice explosion to completely and utterly vaporize the ship and anything within a close range.
The second mode of auto-destruct is through the use of ordinance packages placed throughout the ship. In the event that the warp core/fusion reactors are not cabable of causing an explosion sufficient enough to vaporize the ship, the main computer will automatically switch to secondary auto-destruct. Not as big of an explosion, but definitely enough to destroy anything of value onboard.
[Edit] The suggestion made above on an matter/antimatter reaction without the warp core is a little unsound, mainly because in a warp core ejection, it is sometimes necessary to also jettison the antimatter pods. Although, I 'guess' that, if you were not required to do so, that it'd be a plausable idea..

Energy is not matter. If light (an energy) were matter, it could not, paradoxically, travel the speed of light, because then it would have mass.
Yup. So basically, energy is not matter. Heh.

Yeah..the secondary one was what they used on "The search for spock" The ship didn't explode quickly and leave no trace, it slowly burned to cinders which fell onto the planets surface.

You know what? It doesn't matter whether or not it's logically possible for them to blowup. The fact of the matter is that they would still blow up! I know at least one way that they could blow up at least one room, they could go into a holodeck and turn the safety protocols off and light 400 tons of Trinitrial Toluate (TNT). BBBOOOOOOOOOMMMMMM!
