Sat Sep 20, 2003 10:01 am What exactly is Deep Space Nine? |
|
It sure dosnt look like its Federation.. Infact I could take a fair guess its Cardassian?
I have never seen a Federation starbase that looks like that.. But Deep Space Nine is run by the Federation... Right?
Mabye it was an abandoned Cardassian starbase that the Federation converted?
Someone please explain!

well this might explain things abit better:
Deep Space Nine is a space station originally built by the Cardassians. It was originally built as a mining station and was referred to as Terok Nor by the Cardassians. After the Cardassian withdrawal from Bajor, the station fell into Federation administration. Benjamin Sisko, a Starfleet Officer, was placed in charge and soon the station became of great commercial, scientific and strategic importance. On discovery of the Bajoran Wormhole near by, the station was moved closer to it. In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the full story of this space station is revealed.

Deep Space Nine was our last, best hope for....
Sorry, wrong show.
Essentially, you guessed it. DS9 was originally Terok Nor, a Cardassian oar-processing center. With the Cardassian withdrawl from Bajor, the Bajoran provisional government called in the Federation to administrate and protect the station. When the wormhole was discovered, the station was moved to its mouth so that the Bajorans would control it.
Although Starfleet has a strong presence on DS9, it is still legally a Bajoran station, and will remain such until Bajor formally enters the Federation.

^ I think that has already been explained.

The Bajorans were slaves under the Cardassians, so they were crippled when the Cardassians withdrew. They just called in the Federation to help them re-build, and run it. It was in quite a mess at first...

^While nothing has quite lived up to the level set by Babylon 5, Firefly had the potential to match or surpass it. (It was then cancelled, of course.)
Also, Stargate SG-1, while nowhere near as epic as B5, is far from "drivel". It at least takes its viewers seriously, not assuming they can't remember what happened last week like some shows do. I'd put its intelligence level in the same bracket as TNG and parts of DS9.

AH, but like B5, SG1 requires a longer term understanding of the storyline. I haven't watched SG1 since the beginning so I can't very well pick it up now on its seventh? season and know what is going on.

DS9>B5
Sorry Lindley, just had to do it.
Although I did like what I saw of B5, I should start collecting the B5 DVDs after I finish up with DS9.

B5 was better than DS9...it wasn't as disjointed and followed a specific five year story arc (which was written BEFORE any of the episodes were written) whereas DS9 "jumped on the bandwagon" after dicovering the popularity of B5 within the underground movement of B5 fans. I say underground because, at the time, B5 was considered anti-trek and EXTREMELY less popular than Trek. B5 fans were almost hesitant to admit they loved the show. It wasn't until B5 was picked up by the SciFi channel that it gained respect and popularity among the masses. Before it aired on SciFi most people equated B5 with a campy, lost-in-space kind of silly SciFi (i hate that word...silly...but it describes the whole campy thing well). Anyways, that's my whole opinion of the B5 versus DS9 thing.

You're in luck. The "Stargate Monday" blocks (4 eps, 7-11pm on Monday) that Scifi runs every Monday are going to cycle back to the beginning on October 6th. That rotation covers seasons 1-5.
There will also be a 6pm episode that day, but its season 4. Possibly the funniest ep of the series, but not the best starting point.....if you plan to tape it, just tape 7-11pm.
As for the B5 vs DS9 thing, while I personally prefer B5, DS9 was definately not too shabby. There were some things B5 did better, other things DS9 did better. DS9 had much more money to play with in its FX shots, but B5's FX shots tended to be more dynamic. DS9 in general had better stand-alone episodes; B5 had the more tightly-woven story arc.
