PostThu Sep 18, 2003 5:56 pm    archer... not picard

in my opinion picard is a natural leader, when he was in a conference or just talking to a single member of the crew he usualy sais some inspiring words. now what he said usualy made me think of him not only as a great captain and a good man, but a man who knew politics. then we have archer, i think he tryes to sound like picard when he lecturs the crew about cirtain things but it comes out all wrong, and he ends up sounding really mad, upset, and some what cruel. in my opinion picard made "the next generation" what it was, and i think archer (scott bacula) was a bad pick to pick as captain of the enterprise in the show.

I think Bakula is a great pick. Its the writers that give him the bad name. Remember, great actors have awesome stage presence. Obviously he must've had some since Quantum Leap lasted for so long. But writers who wrote Picard already had a standard to write it off of as Roddenbury was along with the show for awhile. With Archer, its writing a whole new character and if we continue to compare him to Picard, who by far, in my opinion has been the best captain to ever grace the lines of Star Trek, then there is none. Everyone has their faults. I think its cool that they made Archer a bit more human than an all knowing Picard, who quotes old lines from Shakespeare and other historical elements.

a agree with him^ not the person who started this topic. archer is a very good pick. he just walks the walk and he talks the talk as the captain.

I don't like the way Archer snaps at his crew alot. In "The Expanse" he has a go at T'Pol about being pessimistic (Excusable I think since his homeworld was just attacked). But then in "The Xindi" he snaps at Malcolm for being cautious (Which surely as Armoury Officer, is part of his job)...I don't think he inspires his crew very well...

lord_picard,

Archer and Picard are two different people, and it is hard to compare them as "leaders" unless you find some common standard or criteria for being a good leader. Archer shows much more emotion and energy than Picard. Picard is not approachable or friendly as Archer. Archer seems to be more of a buddy. Someone you are more likely to share a laugh with than Picard.

I have no problems with Bacula as Archer, or the character Archer. Bacula acts out the character Archer, and he is doing a good job. The show writers have some part in the personality of Archer, so do not blame Bacula entirely if you do not like the character Archer.

I do not think the writers ever intended for Archer to "sound like Picard." We like new characters and personalities to identify with and relate to, not old and repeated personalities. That is why Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway, all had their own uniqueness. This is true for Archer.

^ i dont know about you but if i were on a star ship, i would want a captain who was well, a captain not a friend or a buddy or a person who i hang out with. i would like to feel that my captain was confident enough to make the right decisions, for the greater good, not a captain who lets his emotions get in the way of the big decision

^ no 2 persons are the same, neither are 2 captains, if you compare picars to say ... kirk... or janeway fot aht matter ...see my point, so i think its a good thing they wrote archer different, his methods may be different, but he gets the job done .. like all good starfleet captains.

^ ur right to a cirtain extent, i think archers style is unique, the attitude he takes is- let nobody push me around, and/or the way you treat me is the way il treat you. but what happens when he comes across an alien species whos attituds are very primitive, and they do not know the arts of pollitics. if archer comes across these guys, what do you think will happen. the smallest problem between them could escalate to war, do you see the point im trying to make, he has to use both the agressive attitude and the political attitude to ultamatly settle an agrement or peace with other cultures.

Casear, Franks, countless of other captains, general, so forth, weren't commanding people all their lives. We've only watched up to three seasons with Archer. We've had seven with Picard and a few movies. Give him some time.

I like Archer. Sure, he's no Picard, but who is? Picard is one of a kind. Archer is more... passionate. More personal with his crew. And sure he has a temper, but hey. That's part of what makes him cool. I mean, who here didn't find that episode where Porthos peed on the alien tree hilarious? Archer was so agitated! And sure he gets grumpy, but everyone has a few quirks. Picard had a problem with kids at first and he was so stony. But he got better. What makes you think Archer won't develop and get better, too? I haven't seen much of Kirk, but I think him and Archer are more similar than Archer and Picard. I've only seen the movies, not TOS, but from that you can kind of see that Kirk will bend the rules for the greater good... I've always thought Picard took the prime directive a little too seriously. Focused too much on the letter of the law that he couldn't see the meaning. Plus Archer and Kirk both have a grudge against another species... Kirk has a problem wth the klingons in the movies and Archer had a problem with vulcans, but now that he's gotten to know T'pol has lightened up and now he has a grudge against the Xindi. So erm... yeah. Archer rocks. All the star trek captains rock.
