PostSat Aug 30, 2003 9:10 pm    Star Trek real life is possible now...

Here's how to make it possible.

1: A blueprint of how the ship will look like inside in out.
2: Thousands of Engineers and Construction workers to create a space ship.
3: Tons and Tons of metal. Titanium would be the obvious choice.
4: The starship vessel would twice the size of any US Carrier/Cruiser.
5: Nuclear power to run the ship or if hydrogen power if possible. Solar power could also be used.
6: Lots Rockets needed to fly the ship into outerspace from earth.
7: Rockets would the obvious choice when moving the ship in outerspace since warp drives haven't invented yet. Tons of fuel would be needed though.
8: Astraunauts, Military Personels, and Scientists from around the world to fly the ship.
9: Tons of computers and computer parts.
10: A captain for the ship. A high ranking military general would be good choice.
11: Missiles and Rockets as defense since phasers and photonic weapons don't exist yet....
12: The ship will used to explorer planets millions of miles away from earth.
13: If possible, the ship should go at 10,000 miles per hour.

Just a possibilty........ I don't think anyone would actually build one now since it probably cost 1trillion dollars to make one

Where would you get the money? And not that many people would volunteer in all likelyhood. And where would you get the fuel? and even if you had it, a match would destroy the whole ship. It would be a giant saftey hazard. So I dont think its actually possible

I kinda think it is possible in a way.
I'd rather wait, though. But I'd be dead, but if reincarnation actually exsists then I wont be

O_O

10,000 miles per hour? When you take into account that it would take 8 years to reach the nearest star at LIGHTSPEED, 10,000MPH is going to take...well, longer than I can bother to count to.

[Edit: Doh, no HTML]

I like your determination, but you got some major flaws there.

Firstly, getting the ship into orbit. You say it's twice the size of any US carrier. That's big! Really, really big! Do you realise just how much fuel you'd need to get something that big into orbit? I dont actually think it's possible (that's a guess however).

Lets say you can though. There's still the cost. Now, it costs an incredible amount of money to get the space shuttle into orbit, $470,000,000 on average for each launch!!!!

The Space Shuttle (including all fuel tanks) weighs about 2,000 tons, and this leviathan of yours is going to be weighing in at 190,000 tons!!! So then roughly speaking it's gonna be like launching 95 space shuttles all at once. That's gonna cost the government crazy enough to try $44,650,000,000!!!!!!!!!!

Any country leader willing to spend $45 billion dollars on something so unrewarding would be hung the next day.

You then make a point about using rockets in space. Nowadays scientists are thinking of better ways to move around in space. Ion drives, solar sails, lasers...but old fashioned rockets? No way, not anymore. Definitely not on a manned mission to reach other planets.

Lastly, your ship isn't going very fast at 10,000 miles per hour. The space shuttle reaches 18,000 mph in Earths orbit and Voyager 1, a probe launched all the way back in 1977 is travelling through space right now at 35,000 mph. You arent going to have much luck at just 10.

I admire your imagination though.

Wouldn't large ships like this be built in space? It'd save the hassle of leaving the planet's atmosphere.

Yeah, I reckon that'd be the best solution.

I just found out a good idea to actually do this. Get into space that is.

1 - Build the ship parts by parts.
2 - Spend months/years flying all the parts to space.
3 - Then do the hard task off putting all the parts together.
4 - If possible tons of fuel be brought to space.

We don't have technology to go FTL. It does not matter what sort of ship it is or how big it is. Something like the phoenix is more realistic.

Or build and launch from the moon. Loads of resources there, make your own fuel and shoot off into space at a fraction of the cost.

We would still have to get there, move all the equipment there, and launch from there.

Probably would cost more in retrospect.

Do you know what conventional rockets are fueled by? Liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen. That giant red thing with the 2 little rockets on the side that hurls our shuttle into space holds it all.

But still, the plan is not possible...at least now. Too many resources.

Now, build a Dyson Sphere. That's impressive.

I wasn't talking about a massive project of getting to the moon and then setting up a base of operations, just imagining that's already happened and we can get straight to the launching.

That would be cheaper.

Why start with a huge ship. Why not create something that has a crew of around 10/20 then i'll be more like a yaught then a huge ship much lighter too

You would still need to take into account the effect of long term weightlessness.....unless you don't plan on coming back to earth?

The space shuttle goes faster than that. Escape velocity for Earth is around 24,000 mph.

You know they are actually working on antimatter now. There are many things scientists are developing and studying. It is only a matter of time until it can be full blown and ready for action. Go to Space.com. It'll tell you all.

Ok, well we may have a theoretical form of power to move FTL, but I don't even thing an engine is theoretical, yet.

You see, there's the problem all in itself. It would be so much better if there were no money wouldn't it. There would be very little war because there would be very little greed.

actually phasers and shields exist at this very moment...there crap but they do exist and there is a regenerative space propulsion technology that exists... its a crap version of impulse and its not very fast but it exists

also there going to build a real starship, not a space shuttle like what already exists but a real space ship, i think they start building nect year and it is schedualed to be finished in 25 years, its being built in space and its apparently going to travel to mars and use people to investigate (apparently) thats supposed to be its first mission!
