08/29/2003 - A bus shuttling people between Gillette Stadium and a pro golf tournament in Norton, Massachusetts was struck by a gate Friday afternoon, injuring some of the passengers inside.

I was watching this on NECN yesterday. They said one guy was impaled by the gate, Several people had both legs broken. It apparently just tore right through the bus to about five rows back.

Six injured as gate hits TPC golf shuttle bus

A metal security gate slammed into a shuttle bus carrying golf tournament spectators from Norton back to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough yesterday, injuring six people, three of them seriously, police and witnesses said.

The gate shattered the windshield of the charter bus and pinned several passengers to their seats, they said.

"It was like a bomb hit the front of the bus," said Kevin Brown, a passenger on the bus, which was returning around 1:30 p.m. from the Deutsche Bank Championship at the Tournament Players Club course. The stadium is being used for tournament satellite parking.

Three people were taken by helicopter to Boston Medical Center. Three others were treated at Caritas Norwood Hospital. The victims' names and conditions were unavailable last night.

Stadium officials said last evening that about 50 passengers were on the bus.

State Police Lieutenant Jeff Stuart said wind "appears to be a factor" in the accident. While there were no major storms in the area, wind gusts of more than 20 miles per hour were reported in the Foxborough area, said Michael Sager, a meteorologist from AccuWeather.

Brown said a female passenger seated in the first row of the Arrow bus had her legs pinned under the metal pole as it tore through the passenger cabin. Two men in the fourth row also were trapped, and one was struck by the pointed edge of the triangular gate, he said. "It was utter chaos; nobody knew what happened," said Brown, of Scituate. "We had to push out windows to escape and people were screaming `My legs; my legs.' "

The bus, operated by Peter Pan bus lines, had slowed down after turning off Route 1 into Gate P8 on the west side of the stadium, Brown said. He said that it was traveling about 30 miles per hour when the gate swung into its path.

David Warren, a parking lot attendant on the scene at the time, said, "The first thing I thought [of] was an airplane blowing up; I jumped." He said the driver appeared to be traveling faster than the posted 20-mile-per-hour limit at the time of the crash.

Warren said the heavy gates are not easily moved. They were all supposed to be locked in the open position. Authorities were trying to determine what happened to the pin that should have held the gate in the open position.

"All these are locked. How the hell these got opened, I'll never know," Warren said.

Ambulances from Foxborough and five surrounding communities responded to the scene. Officials at the stadium said yesterday they are working with State Police and local public safety officials to understand the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The gate that struck the bus is about 300 yards from Route 1. With about 8,000 on-site parking spots, Gillette Stadium is the main parking site for the Deutsche Bank Championship. Spectators with tickets for the tournament are taken to the Norton golf course by shuttle. There is limited VIP parking at several lots in Norton.

The bus driver suffered minor knee injuries, said a spokesman for Peter Pan, which operates the Arrow shuttle. The driver, whom the spokesman declined to name, has been with the company for two years. The bus involved in the accident can hold up to 55 passengers.

There are about 60 buses being used to shuttle spectators between satellite parking and the golf course, the spokesman said. About 175,000 people are expected to attend the tournament.

The shuttle runs between the golf course and Gillette from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Monday, the final day of play. Steve Brenner, a spokesman for the tournament, said spectators usually do not have to wait more than 10 minutes for shuttle buses, which run for about two hours after play is completed.

Jay Monahan, tournament director for the Deutsche Bank Championship, said tournament officials are "deeply saddened" by the accident.

"Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the accident, especially those injured," he said in a statement.

James Bennett of the Globe staff and correspondent Jared Stearns contributed to this report.

That sounds terrible. I would hate to be in an accident like that. My mum once lost her memory temorarally in a car crash. Luckly she got it back though.
