NEW YORK -- A huge power blackout hit U.S. cities spreading from New York to Cleveland and Detroit and north into Canada Thursday afternoon.
CNN reported that the Niagara Mohawk power grid, which serves much of the northeast, may have been overloaded. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg told CNN the outage was "probably a natural occurrence."
"There is no evidence as of this moment whatsoever that this is terrorism," he said.
Federal officials also said there are no indications that terrorism was behind the power outage.
In New York City, the blackout affected subways, elevators and airports, including John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark airports. Thousands of people streamed into the streets of lower Manhattan in 90-degree heat.
In Toronto, Ontario, too, workers left their offices after the blackout hit shortly after 4 p.m. EDT.
Traffic lights were out throughout downtown Cleveland, creating havoc at the beginning of rush hour.
Every prison in New York state reported a loss of power and had switched to backup generators, said James Flateau, a spokesman for the state Department of Corrections.
White House officials were monitoring the blackout from Washington and from San Diego, where President Bush addressed troops at midday.

If you remember Summer of Sam started during a major blackout like this think it will happen again? they always suspected that there was more than one killer if anytime was a good time to do it this would be now.

According to ABC its Channel 2 here no crime is happening but its going to get alot worst before the end is over wait till tonight I'll bet you my bottem dollar that its going to be hell if they don't get the power up.

Im listening to MSNBC they are saying that power is starting to come on slowly they say it will take hours not minutes for power to come on I just also thought of something else rates of babies that are concived (SP) doubles during power outages maybe there will be alot of babies by next spring

Yeah, I was talking to her, and she suddenly disappeared. She just called about ten minutes ago from a pay phone. We forget that alot of the people out there don't have access to the media, and are relying on hearsay. ALOT of rumours going around.

She said had been in touch with the White House, the federal Homeland Security Department, state power officials and Bloomberg.
Bloomberg said Consolidated Edison, which provides power to the area, was not sure what caused the blackout. He said there would an investigation to determine why it occurred and why it affected the whole system.
''I expect everything to be back to business tomorrow,'' Bloomberg said.
He urged New York residents to keep their lights and air conditioners off to prevent power surges when the electricity came back. And, in an effort to calm frayed nerves, he cautioned them to stay cool and drink fluids.
''One of the big risks is that people die because of the heat and lack of water,'' he said.
He said the city was setting up emergency shelters for those unable to get back to their homes.
He said subway trains were stopped, but that emergency procedures were working and passengers were being evacuated.
The bridges are closed to inbound traffic, but were open to allow traffic and pedestrians to leave the city.
Asked whether it was wise for drivers to pick up people who had swarmed into the street, Bloomberg said: ''This is New York where people get along and it's probably pretty safe, and I wouldn't have any qualms about doing it.''
Bloomberg said he was in Brooklyn sitting at a table outside when the outage occurred and he didn't immediately realize it. He said he found out when somebody tapped him on the shoulder.
He called the outage a ''major inconvenience.''
Referring to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Bloomberg added, ''We'll look back on this as another test of New York.''

They are talking about areas near J on the news right now, saying that that area has about maybe 2 hours of water left. And that there are alot of people at Cedar Point (amusement park) trapped on the rides, which are among the biggest in the world.
Dan Rather seems a tad daft.

Wearing a suit and tie, Peter Carayiannis waved vehicles through one busy intersection. ''I've been doing this for about 45 minutes because nobody else is,'' he said.
''The streetcar can't go anywhere, you just have to wait,'' said Mike Collins, a streetcar driver with the Toronto Transit Commission.
Diane Grover, spokeswoman for the Canadian defense department, said Canada ''considers this an act of nature in the Niagara region on the U.S. side of the border. It has caused a cascading power outage affecting 9,300 square miles,'' she said.
Grover said the power company, Ontario Hydro, was in the process of separating itself from the American power grid in order to restore electricity to its customers.
An official at the Ontario power company agreed, saying the problem originated elsewhere.
''We're confident that the trigger for this widespread outage did not occur on our system,'' said Al Manchee. ''There was no indication that there was anything wrong in our system prior to the outage.''
He said power was being restored slowly, with substantial progress expected throughout the evening.
Toronto's international airport was one of six, including airports in New York, Newark, Cleveland and Ottawa that was grounded, according to the U.S. Transportation Department.
Millions of Canadians were without power, and the total blackout area covered roughly 50 million people. Electricity was out in a broad swath of the Northeast - stretching west to Ohio and Michigan - and in southern Canadian cities, starting shortly after 4 p.m. EDT.
In Toronto, Canada's largest city with more than 2 million residents, traffic snarled at major intersections as workers denied transportation tried to get home in their own vehicles, in taxis or on foot.
Power began to come back in some cities as afternoon turned to evening, but officials said full restoration would take much longer.
