PostMon Jul 28, 2003 10:41 pm    Nemesis Shield question

When the E-D was fired on by the borg cube in "First Contact", the shield lit up in a bubble shape, that is, they were a sphere around the ship. However, when the E-D was fired on in "nemesis", the shields were shaped the same as the hull, and seemed to be less effective. Does anyone know why this is? I checked www.ditl.org and they didn't have an answer.

New CG people didn't care about a fluid storyline, or a more canon like answer would be that between 2373 (FC) and 2379 (Nem) Starfleet had developed new shielding that refracted energy in such a manner as what was seen in Nem.

This stands to reason, as the War with the Dominion from late 2373-2375 would have driven the redesign of shields as Starfleet was hard pressed to come up with one that was effective against the Dominion's phased poloron beam, and later the Breen's energy dissapators that destroyed the USS Defiant.

And it was the E-E that fought the Borg in FC, not the E-D.

Yep. I think that it may be a hybrid of janeways armour, and federation shields, but thats only my theory. It is safe to assume that it is some new type of more powerful shield.

Actually i read some where that you can either have a bubble shaped shield that is weaker but if some phaser fire gets through it does less damge to the hull then it would if the shields were shaped like the hull as in Nemesis but if the shields are shaped like the hull they are stronger

and the shields in nemesis seemed weaker because the scimitars weapons were really powerfull and there was so many of them

their shields were weaker because sooooooo much energy was put into the secret weapon.

To me the shields of the Enterprise-E in Nemesis actually seemed stronger than most other ships. If you think about it they took a heavy and sustained pounding from the Scimitar's weapons before the shields were totally drained, quite impressive.

I'd agree with 'the game' for the reasons why Federation shields seemed different and more advanced in Nemesis. Quite obviously the Dominion War would have substantially increased the development of Starfleet shield technology and that development would have most likely resulted in improvements in the technology, especially seeing as they had a captured Jem'Hadar attack ship to study.

I read that having external nacelles results in having a shield bubble which makes the ship faster but have weaker shields. Ships that contain internal nacelles (such as Galor Cardassian Cruiser) are slower but can take more damage...I guess an example of that is in "Caretaker" when the Maquis ship fires photon torpedoes at Gul Evek's ship...the torpedoes detonate against the hull but there is no shield curve....

But Enterprise E does have external nacelles so maybe they just found a way to upgrade the design or something; I don't know...

Also, what about the Dominion War...I don't think any ship used shields did they? I know in those big fleet battles, ships were taking only a couple of shots before being destroyed....No Shield bubbles were shown so either they weren't using shields or they were "hull-hugging" shields...

No, it's just that paramount did not want to make a half hour long cgi scene.

Well for someone like me who thinks that the ships are the real stars of the show, that mightn't be such a bad idea

Yeah. That's part of the problem with Enterprise I think; too many battles doesn't make them as novel...

At www.ditl.com there is a section on sheilds. If you go to sci-tech at the top and then on the side go down to force fields, there is a section on sheilds which explians it.

Well of course, I mean, you just couldn't have a battle without some storyline. It would be like a Steven Segal movie!

thats a good point but big battles are great

on the game bridge comanger the sheilds on the soveren class ship are much stronger than on the galaxy and the sovergen has a "hull hugging shield"

No if you read the voyager tech manual then it answers your question. shields are like 10m from the ships hull. when the ships shields are set as a shield bubble, so that the shields can be exteneded around another ship etc. This makes the shields weaker.

CHECK YOUR CAPS LOCK KEY.
Please.
And its the E, not the F.

And the Dom war shields... The Dominion phased polaron beam was able the penetrate Fed shields at first. It was only when a great many ships were that the Fed found out how to make their shields PPB-resistant.

Correct. The larger the bubble, the lower the field density, and thus it makes for weaker shields which cannot take as much punishment. Skin-tight shielding takes considerably less space than a bubble and thus can take considerably more punishment, but energy shields are not 100% effective against attacks, no matter how dense the fields are. Therefore, skin-tight shields can last longer, but they let through more damage to the ship than regular bubble shielding.
