Chapter Eleven

Ambassador Worf, Federation ambassador to Qonos, opened the comm. channel. He was still getting used to his duties as ambassador and this was one of those duties he hated. He was pleasantly surprised when the face of Lieutenant Tuvok appeared on the other side of the link. Work smiled, no small feat in itself, as he began a conversation with his old Academy instructor. It is good to hear from you Tuvok, Worfs baritone voice filled the small office.

I only wish it were under better circumstances, Tuvok stated calmly.

I am uncertain as to what makes these circumstances unpleasant, Worfs tone matched his confused expression.

Allow me to start at the beginning, my friend. Almost one week ago, Miral Paris, the daughter of Tom and Belanna Paris of Voyagers crew, was abducted. Understanding began to cross Worfs face. Starfleet security discovered Klingon hair and clothing fibers in the infants room. They were unable to determine from whom the hair came. I obtained the genetic sample and called in some old debts among the Klingon High Council to determine from whom the hair came.

I think I could have narrowed the suspects for without half the trouble youve gone through, Worf offered.

Nonetheless, I have uncovered the culprit. Her name is Gerrun and she is a member of the House Kovath, Tuvok explained and received the response he had expected, a small grunt. Not understanding the political climate on Qonos, I was uncertain as to the importance of the abduction.

Worf was all to willing to explain, Just over a year ago, Kovath, the leader of House Kovath, proved the Miral of the House Toral was the traitor among the Klingons during the Dominion War. It seemed Miral had been informing the JemHadar of important covert operations to liberate fallen worlds along the Klingon borders. The High Council allowed Kovath to challenge Miral in ritual combat. Kovath killed Miral and took her house as his own.

Tuvok nodded, but was unsure what impact this had on Miral Paris. As if to answer his question, Worf continued, After a proper investigation was concluded, it was determined that Miral was not the traitor and if any of the House Toral laid claim to their inheritance Kovath would be forced to return the house to its heir.

How does this affect Miral?

In accordance with Torals last wish, the House Toral would become the property of the youngest daughter of the house. Mirals return dictates that the house now belongs to her should she or her parents claim it. House Toral increased Kovaths power among the High Council. It is unlikely he would give up that power without some fight. It is more likely he has abducted the child and is returning here to undergo the ritual which would claim Miral as a daughter of the house Kovath.

Can you give me any information on Kovaths ships? Tuvok asked.

I will send you a manifest of ships that belong to the House Kovath, Worf said agreeably.

Thank you, Ambassador. I will notify Admiral Janeway immediately.

For days, the small Saber class USS Charleston had torn up subspace behind the Bird of Prey, catching up but the significant lead it had established but still unable to overtake it. Harry watched the ship on the forward viewscreen before commenting; Shes going to reach Qonos before we can stop her.

If they reach Qonos and beam down, we may not be able to find her, Ensign Colt added.

Then well just have to stop her before they reach Qonos, Chakotay added.

Captain, we have just received a subspace message from Admiral Janeway, Colt reported.

Onscreen, Chakotay ordered.

Captain, it would seem a mothers instinct was right againthe ship you are chasing, the Chal Daq, belongs to a man named Kovath. It would seem he was the one who abducted Miral in an effort to make her a part of his house on Qonos and gain more power. I have to confess I dont understand the politics of the Klingons, but I get the feeling this would be a bad thing for all involved. Stop that ship or stop that ritual, Captain.

Understood, Admiral. Charleston out, Chakotay said as he turned in his seat to the rest of his crew and added, Seems theyve just upped the ante.

After his duty shift was over, Donovan Colt returned to his quarters and changed out of uniform. He wasnt feeling especially welcome and really felt that he didnt fit in on the Charleston. Most of the crew were transfers from the Voyager and he was feeling like the odd man out. Colt made his way down to the Ten Forward where he imagined hed spend a couple of hours milking his drink and feeling sorry for himself.

When he entered Ten Forward a few eyes glanced over to the newcomer, but no one offered an invitation or even a spare seat. Colt picked a quiet corner and ordered Aldebaren whiskey. He had been there just a few minutes when a shadow appeared over him. Mind if I sit down? a voice asked.

Please, Colt said before looking up and realizing it was Commander Kim. Immediately the nervousness he had felt on the bridge the last few days returned like a tidal wave. Good evening Commander, he immediately added.

Im not on duty, call me Harryplease.

I dont think I could get used to that sir, Colt assured him. This was Harry Kim, earths wonder officer and Voyager hero.

Well then consider it an order, Harry said jovially.

Yes sirum Harry Colt added cautiously. My names Donovan, but you probably already knew that. My friends call me Donny or just Colt.

Alright Colt, I wanted to talk to you about your performance on the bridge, but not as commander to crew more like friend to friend. Colt cringed; someone had noticed his sub-par performance. As the chief conn officer on Voyager, I was incredibly green. Every time I set foot on the bridge for the first few months I felt like the weight of the world had bore down on my shoulders. I felt like I made a million mistakes a day, but the reality was that whatever mistakes I made were very minor and barely anyone else noticed.

Colt began to feel less queasy. Harry Kim had made mistakes when he started on Voyager, he even felt the same way Colt did. Maybe there was hope for him yet, if Harry Kim could become a highly respected officer from the green officer he started out as, what could the future hold for Donovan Colt?

Chapter Twelve

After days of inactivity, Doctor Lewis Zimmerman brought the EMH back online. Please state the nature of the medical emergency? the doctor asked with his typical abruptness.

Remind me to get rid of that next, Lewis said dully. He looked over the Voyagers EMH. It wasnt difficult to change the uniform, that had been quite simple, but getting the hair rightthat was the trick. Lewis thought he had it right this time.

Next? the doctor asked cautiously. What other changes have you already made? Didnt we talk about changes the last time I came home?

Lewis Zimmerman gave him a look of disdain. Its nothing important Doctor. Ive only changed physical parameters of your program, he magnanimously informed the EMH. Just take a look at yourself in the mirror.

The EMH cautiously made his way to the mirror and looked himself over. He had to admit he liked the look of the new Starfleet uniforms, but he noticed he was missing his comm badge. Turning to Zimmerman he asked, Where is my comm badge?

Zimmerman tossed him the modified comm badge he had made. Not only does it function like a comm badge, its also your new mobile emitter. Now its part of your uniform and no one could tell the difference between you, a projection of forcefields and photons, and someone made of flesh and blood.

The Doctor had to admit he liked the idea of a hidden mobile emitter. Turning back to the mirror, he began to affix it to his uniform when he noticed the other big difference in his appearance. He ran his hand through his hair. Whats this?

I thought it would be an easy way for people to distinguish you from me. Im beyond growing hair now, Zimmerman sighed. Ive also added more memory to your program, thats the main reason youve been offline for a few days.

A few days, a lot could have happened in a few days. The EMH ran to the Starfleet news-feed to fill in the gaps. His mood fell when the story featuring the abduction of Miral was shown. I have to get to the Charleston! he ordered Lewis Zimmerman.

Hey, Icheb, wait up! Riley Estes called out as Icheb left the particle physics lab. The cadet was obviously pleased with himself. Icheb stopped just outside the doors and waited for his student to catch up. those tutoring sessions youve been helping me with have been helping a lot. I actually scored in the top ten percent of the class on the last test.

I am pleased things are working out well for you, rabbit.

Actually better than well. I have a couple of friends who need some help in particle physics and they asked me if you would be interested in tutoring them too, Rabbit asked hopefully.

I would be pleased to help, but I cant help wondering what the benefits are for me? Icheb asked, trying not to sound greedy or condescending.

Hmmmnever really thought of it, to be honest, Rabbit said as he scratched his head. Maybe I could teach you something?

I am doing well in all my classes, Icheb assured his friend.

No doubtIm sure you dont need help with school work, but you do need help in other aspects.

Such as? Icheb asked dubiously.

Your social life. Lets face it, youre a stick in the mudno offense, rabbit added.

A stick in the mud? I dont understand?

Look, I may not be the best student but I have a lot of friends. Trust me, Im going to make you popular too.

Icheb just stood in the hall as Rabbit ran off to track practice. First, he needed to know what a stick in the mud was, and second, he needed to brush up on his social skills. He had some additional studies for this evening.

Kovath bared his teeth at the red and brown sphere that rotated beneath the Chal Daq. Qonos, the homeworld, and the High Council awaited his return. Prepare the infant for transport! Kovath bellowed. Kovath had beaten the Starfleet vessel that had pursued them for days now. His goal was within his grasp, he could taste the victory and no one could take it from him, not Miral, Belanna or Starfleet.

We are ready, my Lord, Gerrun informed him. He was proud of her, his wife and now his partner in parenting a daughter. Together they would seize more and more power on the High Council and eventually take majority control of it. Soon, Kovath would run the Klingon High Council, perhaps not in name, but certainly in votes. Then he would insure the Klingon withdrawal from the Federation treaty and advocate war against the Romulan Empire.

Meet me in the transporter room, I am on my way, Kovath ordered. As he rose from his seat he took hold of Haq, his first officer on the Chal Daq, and issued his departing orders, Whatever it takes, do not allow the Starfleeters to beam down to the First City.

Understanding perfectly, Haq replied, Yes my Lord. Now, he would sacrifice himself, his crew and the ship to insure Starfleet can not interfere with the Klingon ritual.

Seven had just finished a briefing on the war between the Borg and Species 8472 and she was exhausted. She returned to her aunts home in Sweden where she had been staying since her return to earth. Her aunt was in the living room as Seven opened the front door. Tough day? she asked looking up from the book she had been reading.

Tough day, she assured Gwendolyn. All the admiralty seems concerned about is the Borg. I have tried time and again to change the subject to other dangerous species the Delta Quadrant has to offer. They just dont seem interested.

Well dear, the Federation hasnt had as mysterious and deadly an enemy in years. The Dominion was a focus for a good long while, but things have settled down there. Which leaves us with the ever mysterious Borg. And since you were one for nearly eighteen years, that makes you the expert.

I know that I can tell them more about the Borg than they could learn in a decade of studying the small amounts of technology they have salvaged from previous encounters, but the Delta Quadrant has other species. The Vidiians, the Krenim, the Kazon, the Vori

As time passes and the threat of Borg Invasion lessens, admirals will be interested in other species, but the Federation just came out of a war they were ill prepared for. I just think they dont want that to happen again.

Chapter Thirteen

Captain Chakotay sat on the edge of his seat as the Charleston drew closer to Qonos. Harry, takes us into geo synchronous orbit over the First City. Prepare an away team and make sure you take Tom and Belanna, he said to his first officer seated next to him.

You heard him Tom, Harry said to his good friend as he made his way to the nearest turbolift. Mister Colt, assemble a security team and have them meet us in transporter room two.

Aye sir, Colt said. His performance on the bridge had improved as much as his confidence since his talk with Harry Kim.

No sooner had the three officers entered the rear turbolift, than the bridge exploded with sparks and dark smoke filled the air. According to Starfleet protocol, the ship status immediately changed to Red Alert. With shields up the away team wasnt going anywhere. Battle stations, Harry called over the blaring alarm klaxon.

Ensign Colt and Tom Paris returned to their stations, relieving the junior officers who had barely taken over for them. Damage to three decks, hull breaches on decks two and four. Casualty reports are just starting to come in, but it doesnt look good, Xanthere shouted from her station at Ops.

What the hell just happened? Chakotay asked.

As if in response, the bridge bucked again under the strain of the torpedo barrage the Klingon Bird of Prey unleashed upon them.

Report, Chakotay called.

Shields down to seventy percent, phasers are offline, Colt added to his previous report.

Return fire with whatever you can muster, Chakotay ordered.

Gritting his teeth and ignoring the increasing number of fallen bodies on the bridge, Colt ordered the loading of photon torpedoes. Forgotten were the blunders of days past, now all that mattered was survival.

Kovath smiled. Martok, Chancellor of the Klingon High Council, had met him personally at the doors to the Great Hall. Martok spoke, but it was tinged with a sound Kovath hadnt heard in his voice before. If he was asked to describe it, he could only think of the word disdain. Your house is quite powerful, Kovath. A warrior does not mince words. Your abduction of this child sickens me. Your use of her as a tool to acquire more power saddens me. Warriors do not acquire power by subversion. You dishonor the council and myself simply by asking us to preside over this abomination.

If it disgusts you so much, why do you agree? Kovath was annoyed.

According to Klingon law I can not deny you.

Then let us get this over with, Kovath said. Even Martok could not ruin his mood today.

Haq smiled as he pummeled the ship with weapons fire. The small Starfleet vessel had no chance against them. He had caught them off guard and had taken the upper hand in the battle because of it. Continue firing at will until nothing is left of that ship.

Sir, the vessel is receiving a transmission from Starfleet Command, his Ops officer informed him.

Unimportant. Continue the assault on the starship, Haq pointed to the shining vessel on his viewscreen.

It appears that the transmission contained a large amount of data.

Haq covered the distance between him and the Ops officer and planted a fist in his face. I told you that was unimportant.

Things were going badly, the ship was exploding around Harry and there was nothing he could do about it. Shields had nearly failed, almost all weapons were off line with the exception of one torpedo tube, transporters were down and they were nearly out of options.

Sir, Starfleet communication coming through, Colt called from tactical. He wiped a trickle of blood out of his eyes as he looked to Harry for some hope.

Collecting his wits and projecting his best air of command he ordered, Open it.

Please state the nature of the medical emergency? The EMH asked calmly among the chaos.

Computer activate the ECH, Chakotay ordered. The EMHs blue tunic turned red and his demeanor changed slightly. Nice hair, any ideas Chakotay added.

The doctor stalked over to the tactical station and nearly pushed aside Ensign Colt. Excuse me, but we dont have time for pleasantries. Colt watched as the doctor used the only remaining torpedo launcher to launch a torpedo in the general direction of the Chal Daq followed by another.

The torpedo, completely powered down, floated across space towards the Chal Daq on its own momentum. Another floated right behind the first. It appeared they really were out of optionsthe torpedoes were not working anymore.

Chapter Fourteen

Signal our surrender Captain, the ECH ordered.

Not wanting his atoms scattered across Klingon space, Chakotay opened a subspace channel. This is the Federation starship Charleston, we surrender. Repeat this is the Federation starship Charleston, we surrender.

The Doctor could imagine the look crossing the Klingon commanders face at this moment; anger and disgust would surely be felt towards these surrendering cowards of the Federation. The bridge filled with the baritone voice of a Klingon, Prepare to be boarded.

Chakotay wheeled around in his seat to look at the Doctor. We cant have them board, were in bad enough shape as it is.

No worries Captain, the Doctor assured Chakotay. Turning to Colt he added, Main sensors are down and I cant access them from this panel. I need to know the minute their shields drop.

A bit wary of the newcomer, Colt merely turned to his secondary tactical console and rerouted sensors there. Their shields are down, Colt said a half second later.

In a blur of motion, the Doctor brought the remaining torpedo bay online. He had previously loaded a single torpedo in the bay. Then he made it look like they gave up on their useless weapons, but the Charleston still had some bite left. Where are those torpedoes we launched? the Doctor asked Colt.

Drifting towards the Bird of Prey now, one of them has lodged near the engine compartments, Colt reported.

Mr. Paris begin moving us away on my mark.

Aye Doc, Paris gritted his teeth and prepared to ply his console, coaxing whatever power he could from the battered engines.

Mark!

At the same time as the command was given to Tom Paris, the Doctor activated the two previously launched torpedoes and then launched a single torpedo towards the ventral side of the Bird of Prey. The Charleston limped away slowly as the torpedo reached its mark. The Bird of Prey had been caught off guard as three photon torpedoes detonated within close range. The viewscreen showed the Klingon ship buckle near its engine room, finally it exploded in a blinding flash of warp core overload.

The bridge crew cheered, but the battle wasnt over yet. They still had to get to Qonos and save Miral, the ship was battered and a lot of the crew still lay where they had fallen during the battle.

Thanks for the help Doctor, Chakotay said with a look of grim determination. We have a lot of woundedI think, for the time being, your talents could be better used in sickbay.

Understood Captain, the Doctor sounded hurt. After all, he had just saved this ship from destruction and now he was being exiled to sickbay.

And Doctor, Chakotay added, I have the position of second officer still openif you know anyone whos interested. Feeling better, the Doctor smiled and ordered the turbolift to sickbay.

Qonos filled the viewscreen as the bridge crew watched the shuttle descend towards the planet. With limited space, the shuttle only transported Tom, Belanna, Harry and the Doctor to the First City. Now it was up to them to end this.

Kovath loomed over the infant. She lay on an altar before the High Council and began the final part of the ritual which would claim Miral as his daughter and make the House Toral permanently his. I claim this child as a daughter of the House

But before he could finish his sentence, the doors to the Great Hall burst open and Belanna Paris entered. You can not claim Miral as your child, she is mine. As her mother I claim her inheritance, the House Toral, also.

Kovath raced across the expanse between himself and Belanna. Tom moved between them but was easily brushed aside by Kovath. He grabbed Belanna, his massive hands wrapped around her neck. Moving close enough to smell the gagh he had for lunch, he whispered to Belanna, I was the one who disgraced your mother by framing her for crimes she didnt commit. I killed her here in this hall during ritual combat and I claimed her house as my prize. I will not let you interfere with my plans. Hatred and anger contorted his face.

Kovath dropped Belanna to the floor and she gasped for oxygen to fill her burning lungs. Harry, replay that on the Klingon planetary comm. system.

Harry had been waiting in the shuttle with the Doctor. No one but the parents were allowed into the Great Hall during this ritual, but they had kept an open channel in the event Tom and Belanna needed help. Now they would use their recording to help Belanna reclaim Miral.

The overhead speakers crackled in every public place on Qonos, replaying Kovaths admission, I was the one who disgraced your mother by framing her for crimes she didnt commit. I killed her here in this hall during ritual combat and I claimed her house as my prize. I will not let you interfere with my plans.

Martok rose from his chair, You are a disgrace to the Klingon race. Your claims here are nullified by your own admission. Beginning with Martok, the High Council, one by one, clapped their arms together in an X shape and turned their backs on Kovath. The message was clear. Kovath was disgraced.

If I cant have your house, than neither will she, Kovath screamed as he bounded across the chamber. He had drawn his Dk tahg knife as loomed over the child ready to strike. As he began to bring the knife down, he was stopped. He turned to look at who had stopped him.

Gerrun looked into his eyes, a depth of emotions filled hers; anger, annoyance, disgust. She took the Dk tahg from him slowly and whirled on Belanna. In her eyes Belanna could see the fury and disappointment there, and something else. If I cant have this child, Gerrun began staring at Belanna, then neither shall you. With that statement, Gerrun whirled and buried the dagger up to its hilt.

Chapter Fifteen

Kovath couldnt believe his eyes when he looked down at the dk tahg, it handle sticking out of his chest. Purplish blood spilled out of the wound and began bubbling up in his throat. Gerrun had always been a warrior first and Kovath had no doubt she had just dealt his deathblow. He couldnt have known that the dagger had pierced both his hearts before slicing through his left lung. Realizing the absurdity of the situation, Kovath did the only thing he could. He turned to his woman, his wife, his bringer of death and justice, and laughed as he collapsed to the floor.

Belanna couldnt believe it either; she sat on the floor trying to collect herself. In the second it had taken Gerrun to kill Kovath, she had been certain the dagger was meant for Miral. She watched almost helplessly as Gerrun collected the child and returned her to the open arms of her mother. Gerrun looked into Belannas eyes and it was then that Belanna knew what she had seen there a few seconds agoit was reassurance that things would turn out alright. If I can not have this child, Gerrun meekly said to Belanna, then you should.

Unable to contain it any longer Belanna laughed and cried and released the tension of over a weeks worth of stress and worry. Thank you.

Kovath has brought dishonor to your family, Martok said as he stood over Belanna, offering a hand off the floor, now I restore that honor to you and your family. According to Klingon law, you may now reclaim your house and Kovaths as well.

Belanna wiped a tear from her eye. I claim the House Toral in the name of Miral Paris. Martok nodded, but Belanna continued, However, I have no interest in the House Kovath.

That being the case, the house Kovath will be distributed among the rest of the honored houses, Martok bellowed to the rest of the council.

Just because I have no interest doesnt mean I wont decided what to with it, Belanna answered defiantly. The House Kovath will become the property of Gerrun, Kovaths wife.

Martok whirled around to challenge her, but the look on Belannas face must have been enough for him to think twice. Very well, the House Toral becomes the House Paris and the House Kovath becomes the House Gerrun. You know, Martok looked to Belanna and Tom, since Miral is an infant she will need someone to look after her interests. I name you Belanna Paris regent of the House Paris. You shall take possession of Mirals assets until such time as she is capable of assuming the responsibility herself.

That means wed have to stay here on Qonos? Tom asked cautiously.

Yes, Belanna answered.

Well, its bound to be interesting, he said and looked at Belanna knowingly. Isnt it?

Life on Qonos is never dull, Belanna told him, but then we tried life on earth and look where we wound up.

Tom and Belanna laughed, the decision had been made to stay on Qonos. Tome held Belanna close and the three Parises hugged on the floor of the Great Hall.

Harry wandered the scarred halls of the Charleston on his way back to the bridge. The ship had seen better days and she was just out of spacedock, so that wasnt saying much. Fortunately, they had patched up the hull in the last few days and the engines were back online. Charleston was ready to go home, but there were a few more things they had yet to do.

As he entered the turbolift, Harry heard someone call, Hold the lift. He was pleased when Ensign Donovan Colt entered. He still looked a little worse for wear but the green ensign had already been in his first space battle and he had come out of it a little better than he had gone in. The last few days had healed the bruises, but the look of confidence hadnt faded as easily.

Commander Kim, I wanted to thank you.

For what? Harry asked.

The other day in Ten Forwardour conversation helped me realize that I wasnt the only one who had experienced feelings of anxiety, fear and regret on the bridge, that I wasnt alone in feeling different from everyone else. It really helped me a lot.

Harry smiled. Dont mention it.

The turbolift stopped and the bridge and the new friends emerged. Harry joined the small group gather below while Colt took his position at tactical. Wondered when youd get here? Tom made a show of asking.

Just like you to be late Harry, Belanna scolded. Chakotay smiled at the gibes.

Some of us are still in the fleet and still have work to do, Harry responded and glanced over at Ensign Colt. The group of friends shared moment of silence. You sure about this? I mean it is Qonos, the Klingon homeworld.

Maybe security will be better here, Tom quipped.

Were sure, Harry, and you have an open invitation to drop in any time, Belanna added.

Im gonna miss you guys.

Were going to miss you, the Doctor amended as he stepped out of the turbolift.

Well, its time to go, Tom said, trying to sound cheerful and optimistic.

Try as he might, Harry couldnt detect a single bit of sarcasm from Tom, and for the first time he realized that maybe this was the right thing for their family. Good luckto all of you.

Captain, message for you from Starfleet Command. Captains eyes only, Colt relayed the new information that had just flashed across his board.

Ill take it in my ready room. Harry, escort our guests to the transporter room.

Chakotay stepped from the bustle of the battle-damaged bridge and into the shambles of his broken ready room. Fortunately, he thought, he hadnt had time to bring any personal items to decorate it. Surely they would have been destroyed. Chakotay moved to his desk and activated the comm system on his personal computer. Admiral Janeway appeared and rather than the relief he expected to see on her face, she was the model of tension. We have a problem, Captain.

Another one? Chakotay wondered aloud.

Long range sensors have detected transwarp signatures and theyre on a direct course for earth, Janeway explained. She watched as his face fell with the implications.

Transwarp? he reiterated before saying the two words she had been thinking. The Borg.

Really Good Stories.

They are so far reaching that you may have trouble
keeping them all going with the same intensity. Your
efforts have certainly been worth it!

Yeah bump....the story is old and if you wanted to read Birthrights you have to first read Homecoming. Homecoming was way down the line on page four so by giving it a bump I propelled it to the top of the list again. Makes it easier so people don't have to go looking for it.
