[EPISODE] Chain of Command Part II

Sypnosis:

While under the command of an unfeeling new captain, the U.S.S. Enterprise attempts to rescue Picard from the Cardassians.

In an attempt to obtain information from their hostage, the Cardassians inject Picard with a serum that forces him to answer all questions truthfully. He soon reveals the exact nature of the Federation's mission to destroy metagenic weapons on Celtris III. However, his Cardassian captor, Gul Lemec, reveals that the situation on Celtris III was simply a trap, invented to lure him into Cardassian space. The Cardassians have captured them in order to learn strategy the Federation will use in case of a Cardassian attack. When Picard indicates that he knows nothing of such a strategy, Gul Madred begins to torture him in violation of the law.

Back on the Enterprise, Gul Lemec informs Captain Jellico, Riker and Troi that Picard is being held hostage. Jellico prepares to rendezvous with Worf and Beverly, but refuses Riker's request to attempt a rescue mission for Picard, stating that his former captain is probably already dead. Later, Gul Lemec tells Riker and Jellico that if Jellico admits Picard's mission was authorized by the Federation, his life can be spared. When Jellico refuses, Riker loses his temper, and is promptly relieved of his post.

Surprisingly, Jellico chooses Data as Riker's replacement and with Geordi's help, they deduce that the Cardassians faked the metagenic weapon situation to lure Picard. As the discussion continues, they also realize that Picard is probably being tortured to reveal information he doesn't even have, and that their actions could indicate that the Cardassians are planning an attack.

Jellico directs the Enterprise to Minos Korva, where he believes they can intercept the Cardassians and launch a first strike. The rest of the senior staff warns him that he is flirting with disaster by initiating a Cardassian battle in their territory, pointing out that they have no proof the Cardassians are preparing for war and that thousands of innocent lives may be lost. Still, Jellico holds firm. At the same time, a starving, exhausted Picard manages to hold firm against Gul Madred, winning some small victories in their battle of wills.

Jellico prepares to begin his mission and travel into Cardassian space in a shuttlecraft. However, when Geordi informs him that Riker is the best pilot on the ship, the captain swallows his pride and asks Riker to lead the excursion. Riker agrees, and he and Geordi are successful in their effort to lay mines throughout the sector per Jellico's instructions. Before long, a furious Lemec contacts Jellico, who agrees not to detonate the mines If the Cardassians withdraw and Picard is returned. Lemec agrees and a weak disoriented Picard soon arrives on the Enterprise relieving Jellico before his overjoyed crew.

I thought this episode was ok. It wasn't very fast paced though. Just an average episode.

^I think it wasn't very fast-paced because it was more of a politics-based episode than action packed. I still thought it was pretty good.

Side note: For some reason, I always confuse this episode with "Unification."

I love this episode though I cannot watch it anymore. I cannot stand this torture Jean-Luc is goin through. But I saw it one time. That's enough. But I know it is a good episode I am just thinking it is real and I can feel his pain... So I stay away from watching it.

Yeah, that plot was good, but the sub-plot wih Jellico, that was good too.

Err i mean,it was good.Not fast paced,but pretty hard hitting at times.One almost couldnt believe that would happen to Picard...and the next minute all those unpleasant things were happening to him.Wich just shows.never become a ship`s captain! One minute your assimilated by the borg,and as soon as you think,well nothing worse than that can happen,your getting interrogated,brutally.Actually they were lenient on him,compared to rumors of other...maybe because of his rank.But the politics were good,all kinda like a cold war in space........

Meh, I never liked it. I don't like Jelico.

But they did use a reference from 1984. What did they use in that book, was it lights? I can't remember.

The word ended in a gasp of pain. The needle of the dial had shot up to fifty-five. The sweat had sprung out all over Winston's body. The air tore into his lungs and issued again in deep groans which even by clenching his teeth he could not stop. O'Brien watched him, the four fingers still extended. He drew back the lever. This time the pain was only slightly eased.

lol! Yes,fighting the gorn,getting tortured,losing his son,cant remember it all...........As for Sisko.....that one episode " Far beyond the stars" must have been pretty unpleasant for him.....

Not to mention losing his wife to the borg......losing quite a few people he cared about......Getting his station constantly invaded,almost dying a few times,stuck wounded on some backwater planet once with only a pshychopath for company ,not knowing if he`d survive that ,that one time when he was in the box......yeah he got tortured once too,now i remember ! That ep where he and o`Brian i think,on this planet where the women refused to let the people use any technology,and there was this box in the sun...what was that ep called...but anyway,a few non pleasant happenings too there.........

From what I remember, Kirk got beaten up in almost every episode.

I've only watched about five Deep Space Nine episodes, all of which are about Bashir , so I dunno what happened to Sisko.

I think it was some notes in every script....Kirk had to get beaten up,and his shirt ripped,prob. to show off his bod or something,some red shirt ensigns had to die horribly,and Kirk had to get the girl...(ok,that might be seen as the bonus to being a captain,but times have changed,he was the only one like that )


Bashir eh ? IIRC some pretty horrible things happened to him too,once or twice .......hmmmm.......
