I think, that it is a light version of the shield that prevents micropartical colisions to the hull, thats what I've heard ne way

i think it's so the ship doesn't ram into anything like debris or an asteroid while in warp because when they go faster than light, hitting something could tear the ship apart

The main deflector emits some sort of pulse which moves any bits of debris from micro particles to asteroids out of the ships path. It also contains most of the sensor and is able tosend out a variety of pulses and beams of certain energy types.

i hope that helps

In the star trek encyclopedia

Navigational Deflector: On many federation starships, a powerful forward-looking directional force-beam generator used to puch aside debris, meteroids, microscopic particles, and other objects that might collide with the ship. The navigational deflector of the Enterprise-D was modified in 2366 in a desperate effort to improvise a weapon against the Borg assault on Earth. The modefied deflector provided a single, massive pulse directed at the Borg ship. The use of the weapon caused significant damage to the Enterprise-D's warp drive and burned out the deflector itself, but failed to stop the Borg vessel. ("The Best of Both Worlds, Part 2" [TNG]).
On an Intrepid-class starship, the power of a transporter signal could be boosted by tying the transporter system directly into the navigational deflector. ("Non Sequiter" [VGR]). While in Earth's past in 2063, a group of Borg attempted to convert the Enterprise-E's navigational deflector dish into an interplexing beacon that they intended to use to communicate with the Borg collective in the Delta Quadrant. (Star Trek: First Contact).

And for the Bussard Collectors(ramscoops) it lets through only the particles they need to collect.

Also, travelling at warp without a deflector dish would be suisidal.

let me simplify this whole thing the is what i read out of Star Trek the magazine i will simplify it the deflector(funny looking blue thing-a-ma-bober in the secondary hull) pushes space junk out of the way of the ship.

OMG ALL ST FANS AND U DNT KNOW WOT A DEFLECTOR DISH IS.

OK HERES WOT IT IS:

THE DEFLECTOR DISH IS A LARGE CHANNELER USED TO EMMIT HIGH FREQUENCYS AND AMPLIFY THINGS. IN EFFECT, IT CAN PROVE TO BE QUITE DANGEROUS, AND CAN FATALLY RADIATE SOMEONE. THEY HAVE BEEN CREATED, BUT THE HIGHEST POINT HAS NOT BEEN REACHED. IT IS A THEORY THAT THE HIGHEST FREQUENCY AND BEAM COULD INSTANTLY EVAPORATE AN ENTIRE TOWN.

WE REALLY NEED TO BE CAREFUL OF WHAT WE BUILD.

THE MAIN DEFLECTOR CANT BE USED TO MOVE DEBRIS AT WARP, AS THE WHOLE SHIP IS JUST AROUND 70,000,000 LIGHT PARTICLES AT WARP, GIVE OR TAKE A 100,000
