PostMon Jul 07, 2003 9:18 pm    Poem: "I'm Sorry Mommy"

Im Sorry Mommy

Im sorry mommy.

Im sorry that Im not beautiful, or athletic, or a prodigy.
Then I could take a test or play a piece
And get a big scholarship to college,
So that you wouldnt have to worry
About how to make ends meet.

Im sorry Im not skinny.
Then I could shop in Filenes
Wear cheap clothes
So you could come home early and play with my sisters
While I did my homework
Instead of working till you drop
And coming home angry.

Im sorry Im not happy all the time.
Then you wouldnt have to deal with moods
Or sigh heavily when you saw me
Or when I opened my mouth you would listen,
Instead of wincing.

Im sorry Im not social all the time.
Then you would have to worry about parties and booze
Instead of loneliness
And you could stop trying so hard to drive me around
Because you knew Id always have a friend,
No matter when we got to the movies.

Im sorry I cant always agree with people.
Then you wouldnt have to worry about my big mouth
And you could say what you wanted to
And know that someone would always agree with you,
And you could be happy.

Im sorry Im not old enough.
Then you could just wave goodbye
To all the problems that I carry with me
And all you would have to think about
Was what you wanted to do with your day.

Im sorry I cant work hard enough.
Then you wouldnt have to pay for so much
And you could get more for yourself
So that you could be ecstatically satisfied.

Im sorry I eat too much,
Im sorry I dont play sports,
Im sorry Im not beautiful,
Im sorry Im not confident,
Im sorry I dont know who I am,
Im sorry I cant comfort you the right way.

Im sorry for everything and nothing,
Im sorry for imperfection,
Im sorry for rainy days,
Im sorry for too much sunshine.

Im sorry mommy.

That reminds me a little of the book "Ask Alice".

Of course! I meant to do it, but something happened outisde my house, so I just pressed submit and ran out!

The book is about a young girl (It says 15 on the cover, but I think it began when she was 14). She and her family moves to a new place, where she is accidently introduced to drugs at a party.
She goes deeper and deeper down in it, runs away from home, finds new friends who also uses, and so on.

It based on a true story, too. It's the girl's own diary, and to protect the family, the cover says "Author Anonymous".

Wow. Very impressive poem. It takes a talented writer to produce something as emotion-provoking as that. You should be very proud. It's a gift to have the words to express such deep emotions.

That was a really frightening book. "Go Ask Alice" it was called. The ultimate irony was of course that she was killed for drugs long after she had completely stopped her addictions

prayerful, thank you very much. I wrote it during a particularly bad weekend: we're a bit pressed for finances and I needed a lot of new clothes for camp, because I've gained weight since last summer and my clothes don't fit. So not only was it humiliating for me to need new clothes, it was even more aweful to have Mum be so upset about it.

Right, I forgot the "Go". (Probably because I've read both the English and the Swedish version, and in the Swedish one there is no "go").

It really was horrible at times. My teacher gave it to me along with another english book, and she warned me beofre I started to read, but I couldn't even imagine what can happen to one single person during the course of a only few years.

I'm thinking about writing some music for the words: what do you guys think? It would have to be restructured of course but I think it would make an interesting song...Thoughts?

Yeah... I've got the book "Go Ask Alice". Even the cover's blue and depressing. I hated the way the chocolate covered peanuts were spiked, when she was trying so hard to stay clean. At least I know the effects of the drugs I use, and I never overdo it (caffeine and alcohol).

Good idea. It surely would be a well-needed break from some of the songs that are popular today.

Yeah, what someone had done to the peanuts made me so mad! She almost killed herself! If I remember correctly, there were several bottles on the Swedish cover, though I didn't think that really fit the content.
