Tue Jul 01, 2003 2:25 pm Alert: Ship in freefall - A quote from the Radio Times |
|
This is a quote from the 5-11th July issue of the UK TV Listings Magazine, the Radio Times. I realise this topic has been brought up before, but I thought this merited a new topic I don't care if you move it, Mods, I just wanted to say my bit.
I would like to say that I have never seen any of Enterprise, I just thought you guys would like to read this
I've tried to retain the original formatting, so i don't always put the titles of TV series in italics

The starship Enterprise may soon be boldly going to the scrapyard
By John Plunkett
Star Trek fans fear that TV bosses will set their phasers to "axe" after US ratings for the story's latest incarnation hit a record low.
Fewer than five million Americans have been tuning into series two of Enterprise, starring Scott Bakula. In the heyday of Star Trek: the Next Generation, audiences hit nearly 20 million.
Enterprise is a "prequel", set before the original Star Trek, which famously starred William Shatner as Captain Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Mr Spock. And that's half the problem, says Toby Weidmann, editor of Star Trek Monthly.
"Prequels are historically harder to pull off," he says,. "They create all sorts of continuity problems, and Star Trek fans are notorious nit-pickers. In the original series, Klingons were humans with beards. Now they look like Cornish pasty heads. How do you explain that?"
Box-office takings for last year's Star Trek Nemesis have also been the lowest of the movie series. But Weidmann says TV's Enterprise just needs time to find its feet. And channel executives insist the show is set to return for at least one more season. |

that line is particularly worrying, Im afraid to admit that star trek franchise really is a mess right now, such a bad state is worrying, the franchise seems to be running on impulse power and the future isn't looking bright might as well hit the self destruct. Also activision (games publisher) are sueing viacom over the trek games, activision are saying that the star trek franchise is such a state that how can they sell games based upon a weak product, at least a games company has the b*lls to tell them how it is maybe they will take notice and stop convincing themselfs that trek is ok, its time for the bosses to sit up and take notice. As well as tv ratings hitting rock bottom and poor box office takings for nemesis
is there any hope left....

I think season 3 will redefine trek. Star Trek needs to be put out there more, moved to a place like Fox again or even ABC or NBC. Its because its in UPN that its killing the show. Again, not every cable station carries UPN. But they do carry the major networks.

Currentley, Star Trek is awful, Enterprise hasnt been interesting. Hopefully we wont have to wait the 18 or someodd years that occured between TOS and TNG to have a good Star Trek show.

I don't think nit-picking is really all that bad a thing, it's just that Trek is so complex that more mistakes are made than in other shows, I'd guess.

In all honesty I don't think Enterprise will make the 7 seasons in my opinion. The storylines so far (again, in my opinion) have rapidly deteriorated. The Temporal Cold War premise delivered in Broken Bow has been lost somewhere along the lines. New storylines are weak whilst others are just re-hashes of previous Trek episodes. Again, all of this is in my opinion only.
I imagine that when Enterprise finishes (for whatever reasons), unless there is a sudden boost in the audience figures, Trek might be left for a year or two and will be "relaunched". Hopefully by then the market will be fresher and people will have had a breather from it. Perhaps that would attract new markets.
Since Nemesis I've had a sinking feeling that Star Trek is very quickly losing its credibility. Having seen the latest episodes of Enterprise I can't see a sudden improvement occuring.
If episodes continue to reflect the current level of quality that they show now I can't see Enterprise lasting as long as TNG or DS9 or Voyager. Mind you I don't know much about these sorts of things anyway lol.

I say that enterprise for season 2 had a strong start and finish the problem was the cluster of poor mid season episodes, I think that if Star Trek does take a break it will be for around 5 years, but will that really make a differance I mean look at the break they took from Insurrection to Nemesis and that never made an impact, apart from making star trek lose money and attract more negetive publicity to an already weakened franchise . I think the problem lies with the way the product is being marketed and obviously berman and braga need to be removed, they are living in there own little world of, as long as their happy the fans are happy with what they are churning out of the enterprise production line

I would agree with removing Berman and Braga, they've not done anything much for the show at all (except for a nice little episode called Attatched...). If you feel like a good laugh there's a brilliant fanfic by TrexPhile, called Justice for All, http://www.northco.net/sheri/justice.txt Mods will probably remove that when I say it;s rated R but it's a great work (involving Q, if hat just might tempt you to click...)
My mum was a fan of TNG and Voyager when they were made, but now she doesn't like them as much, she says she's 'grown out' of them. Maybe just wht, 50,000 Trekkers all decided they were too old for scifi...
I think to the younger generations (e.g. mine...:-S) the whole star trek thing is percieved as nerdy, it's just totally uncool to watch trek...Personally I say that trek isn't all that totally technical, it's more ethical. Younger people could probably learn quite a lot from watching trek....if they'd just be prepared to forget the uncool image (i was never cool to start with so that wasn't a problem to me...)

They both run the interior situations of the Star Trek world, you don't hear much about them becuase they are always busy.
