Tue Jun 24, 2003 2:09 pm How would you have made Enterprise? |
|
Hypothetical situation. Its 2001, and Enterprise is in development. You are put in charge of designing the show, the universe, everything. What would you have done differently?
Please don't say "Nothing". There's got to be *something* you'd like to see different about the show, no matter how small.
Myself:
1) I'd like to see a crew which is living in a tin can of a ship, which can travel at warp 5 but isn't a self-sustaining city like ENT seems to be.
2) Give us a feel for the fact that Earth has a small network of outposts constructed by its warp 2 fleet. Resupply posts, border patrols, that sort of thing.
3) Weapons which are different. Ideally, cutting lasers and nuclear torpedoes. Maybe some form of repulsor beam, used in a defensive capacity against incoming warheads. Polarized hull plating which doesn't act exactly like sheilds. Tactical countermeasures.
4) A crew which has clearly been trained for what they're doing, as demonstrated by actions, not words.
5) Conflict between those who feel the ship should have military priorities, and those who think they should simply explore. The captain should perhaps have to weigh the two philosophies now and then.
6) What's the general public's reaction to all this? Are the politicians trying to use Enterprise's mission to their own advantage? Give "special" orders to Archer in the hopes of furthering their agendas?
7) No darned Vulcan database. The Vulcan liason officer should be keeping that information from them unless its necessary, in keeping with their noninterferance ideals. Let the crew find their own way.
Most important: Don't try to circumvent canon! Use it as a stepping stone to interesting stories instead. So, Tobin Dax is on Vulcan at some point in this time frame? Let's visit him! The "Romulans", this mysterious new race a few traders have reported, could perhaps raid a few outposts and shift Earth's priorities to defense. Don't write stories by saying, "we previously established that first contact doesn't take place for another 100 years....how do we get around that?" Instead, write stories by saying, "Here's an interesting event of the time period which we know nothing about. Let's explore it."
9) The crew can make mistakes, but please, don't make those mistakes be the result of an action which half the audience knows is STUPID.
10) Regaring the Temporal Cold War. I have no problem with it in principal, but Archer shouldn't know about it...at least not right away. Perhaps add in Daniels as a recurring character who tries to influence Archer. The audience knows his connections, but it takes awhile before Archer realizes what's going on.
11) Have some of the early episodes involve Enterprise assisting in the construction of a new offworld colony, which can become a supply stop for them in the future. I thought of this when it occured to me that the Alpha Site in SG1 holds special significance to fans, because its Earth's first permanent offworld outpost, and though we didn't see it built, it was constructed during the course of the show. Similarly, there's a lot more resonance with a place when its something that Our Heros (TM) have helped to build, rather than simply a colony which they stop by for a visit.

1) The Romulan war, that is supposed to take place sometime soon, use that as a plot, they never saw the romulans face because veiwscreens hasnt been developed and the were using lasers and torpedoes to battle.
2) Enterprise should have a support vessels exploring the region close to earth.
3) The construction of a massive starbase orbiting earth where vessels can be built faster and more efficiently.
4) The daedalus class vessel comes into production in 2161, have it as a top secret starfleet prototype.
Thats what could be fixec along with lindleys ideas

Their all good points that would be nice to see.
But, I would have a different plot altogether. The fact that paramount decided to make series 5 before the time of series 4 is wrong. I never treat enterprise as canon with TOS, TNG, DS9 & VOY. I like to think ENT is some different reality than the other series.
If I could change anything, it would be the plot. Have a series set after nemesis focusing on the new peace between the feds and roms. Not focused on one particular ship. Maybe instead focused on S/F HQ.

I like to knit pick. [b]
1) I'd like to see a crew which is living in a tin can of a ship, which can travel at warp 5 but isn't a self-sustaining city like ENT seems to be.
[b]We don't see outside of what the producers want us to see. If anything, I would imagine that they'd be picking up supplies or getting them from a starfleet ship when they run low. Maybe they have a food taxi.
2) Give us a feel for the fact that Earth has a small network of outposts constructed by its warp 2 fleet. Resupply posts, border patrols, that sort of thing.
In Broken Bow, Forest mentions about how much further they've advanced in one hundred years. Since the Vulcans ultimately wanted to confine Starfleet in their own system, I would imagine that its not Sol we need to worry about as far as a network is concerned.
3) Weapons which are different. Ideally, cutting lasers and nuclear torpedoes. Maybe some form of repulsor beam, used in a defensive capacity against incoming warheads. Polarized hull plating which doesn't act exactly like sheilds. Tactical countermeasures.
I totally agree
4) A crew which has clearly been trained for what they're doing, as demonstrated by actions, not words.
How do you show that in a show? Its not overly packed with action!
5) Conflict between those who feel the ship should have military priorities, and those who think they should simply explore. The captain should perhaps have to weigh the two philosophies now and then.
Sounds like Picard.
6) What's the general public's reaction to all this? Are the politicians trying to use Enterprise's mission to their own advantage? Give "special" orders to Archer in the hopes of furthering their agendas?
Indeed... Political intruige!
7) No darned Vulcan database. The Vulcan liason officer should be keeping that information from them unless its necessary, in keeping with their noninterferance ideals. Let the crew find their own way.
I disagree. The Vulcans offered to help, so they can help!

Are you listening Berman?
9) The crew can make mistakes, but please, don't make those mistakes be the result of an action which half the audience knows is STUPID.
Indeed. Subtle mistakes that lead to something bigger/greater that was not forseen... and DON'T BE OBVIOUS ABOUT IT!
For instance, Archer leaves something open that contained some sort of biogenic properties. Before the scene ends, you zoom in on the can... WTF.
I don't even know what's going on.

I dont love its commander. I just am not fond of it. I dont like prequels in startrek because the writers of enterprise are rewriting star trek history.
I has some good actors like T'pal,Archer and Trip (hears a loud cheer in the background) but the story line hasn't got enough viriety

It doesn't matter, if youd like make a topic called "Disscusion about Enterprise", this topic was made for you to say what you would have changed about it, not to discuss views on it.

I think my ideas are better
Many of the fans were dissapointed that the show was set prior to any trek show already made, but the producers were running out of ideas, personally I think that having another show set in the 24th century would be overkill, there are already 3 set in that time and im sure that none of the fans would have liked it because it wouldnt be able to have any new ideas for stories (Think about it, another starship, or station set in the same time as Voyager DS9 and TNG. There wouldnt be any plots left to use in it)

I wouldn't have. It was a mistake going back to the past...not that I'm complaining-I'm just glad that they had a series after Voyager. It's not terrible...but the timeline thing gets on my nerves every so often.

These are going to be very simple because I'm not very technical minded:
I would have made the warp core a pretty one like Voyagers because it really gets on my nerves just being a big rusty pice of metal
and
Secondly, I would sack Archer and have Kate Mulgrew playing an ancestor of Janeway.

totally agree, I still watch enterprise yet they are so restricted due to the timeline and the only way the show gets good is to consistantly ignore it and start rewriting the way it all started.
Prequels suck.

In other words you want another series in the 24th century.
B&B have put so many elements from the 24th century in ENT. Borg, Ferengi, photon torpedos that look just like the ones from the 24th century. The list goes on. If Enterprise is to be successful, the writers need to stop doing this. It will kill the show for sure.
