They work by combining an equal amount of matter and anti-matter suspended in pellets. A maximum yeald is 1.5kg of each matter, and anti-matter. Upon impact, the matter and anti-matter combine to form an explosion.

thats true but they have evolved over the years in TOS it was mainly a defensive weapon with a limited range and was usually only fired at warp

with photons that soudns right, quantums are slightly diferent in that they use subpartical colisons to do damage (quantum=smaller then atom) I think they also have sume antimatter, just to be cool
