Later on in the pilot Malcolm gets the newer "Phase Pistol" weapons out, so they use those instead. What I didn't understand was why didn't they use the Phase Pistols on Rigel???

As for the laser gun things, in the book they are described as Phased Energy Torpedoes or something...However, in the episode Silent Enemy Phase Cannons are installed instead and from then on, they are used in place of the lasers. In fact I think the lasers only featured in the pilot because in the episodes in between Broken Bow and Silent Enemy they only use Torpedoes...

It was low-energy plasma weapons, the same kind that the ECS Fortunate had.

Or perhaps it was a screw-up by the FX team. After all, they've done it before------in "Detained", we saw a shuttlepod fire a phase beam, when it had previously been established that the shuttlepods only had plasma weapons. ("Shadows of P'Jem" and "Desert Crossing").

Also, in "Vox Sola", one of the redshirts fires a phase beam from a rifle-type weapons. Previously it had been established that they only had 15 phase weapons on board, and they were all pistols. That rifle should have fired plasma bolts.

The FX team just messes up a lot, I guess.

^Heh.

Regarding the sidearms used on Rigel, those are EM-33s, which have no stun setting.

personally, I would have liked to see those used more---perhaps the entire first season. The phase pistols could have been part of the upgrade in "The Expanse".

I agree, it was a nice change to see a weapon that fired "bullets" rather than the usual beams of energy as in all the other Trek series.
