United States of Europe?
Do you think there should be a United States of Europe? What are your thoughts in this matter?

let me say this now i do not agree with this united states of europe thingy cos it'd mean a drastic currency change which i also disagree with. i discussed this in business at school last week and everyone agreed it'd be bad for the economy

I don't agree... as for a major currency change, what do you think the Euro is? I just hope the UK doesn't join... I like my pounds and pennys well enough, thank you, and our country needs its own interest rates...

There are deeper issues here than Economy…but I didn’t expect any of you to understand. Thank you for the input regardless.

I think it would take away from the individuality of each country, causing mass conformity. Allying yourself to someone is one thing, changing to fit them is quite another.

A bit less degrading to our users is appreciated.
A united states of Europe doesn't excist and never will be. Nor will Europe ever call itself that. It is the European Union.

I'm with Maquis - the EU is special because it allows the countries to be 'individual', not all the same. The quaintness of some smaller countries would be lost, I think, if they became states. Although I don't know very much about politics, economy etc., I don't think Britain should join the Euro. I wouldn't mind too much if we did, but yeah, it would be weird to adjust to it. Mind you, all the other countries adapted perfectly well.
Ok. I'm done confusing you all now...

Actually, I was just trying to keep my answer simple. And yes, it is more than just economics. It's also very political. If England (and Great Britain as a whole, although I believe Scotland and Wales are capable enough to make their own decision on this) were to join the Euro, it would be under more pressure to conform to the rules of the EU, which in some cases would result in our having to relax some of our rules, for example on transportation of live animals. I like the way we are now, as how do Brussels know what's best for our country?

If our Government in Sweden hands over power to Brussels I'll become hysteric. It robbs the countries of their individuality. Sweden is a member of EU. Which I hate. And there are soon to be voting if we should have Euros. No thank you, I say. I like our Kronors and res very much and I dont want to change them.

I respect your opinions however selfish they may be.
I’m an optimistic person and I believe that we can unite as a species. It is time for us to stop fighting amongst our selves and focus on up and coming issues, such as the volatile nature of our solar system. It will only take one large meteor to destroy our world. Let’s stop having trivial arguments about non-existant gods and let’s stop arguing about how to divide the resources of our world (see: Oil in Iraq). We need to prepare for the future.
This is my point.
Now I am not saying that every country should hand over their identity and become equal. There does however need to be some form of worldwide constitution that helps to prevent war and terrorism allowing us to focus on more important issues, such as space exploration.
Wouldn’t you rather be climbing a mountain on Mars, than fighting a war against terrorism? I know I would.

I really do hope we don't join The Euro since it would be robbing us of The Pound and all of it's history. The Pound first started in Roman Times so that's how far back it goes.

Yeah.. and the Royal Mint's over 600 years old itself... it's the oldest mint in the world! We'd lose so much history! Also, it isn't surprising that our economy is more stable than Europe's at the moment

In my economic class we read this magazine, and that was the headline for the front page. The article was basically about the new Euros. I found it very interesting.

When people are saying United States of Europe, it is not the same country as the United States of America.
The term "United States" is just a prefix to the country, it means there is more then "one" state in the coutnry.
So it's not the United States of America assimilating other coutries, it's just other countries joining together (well currency wise anyway).
Although I hope people don't just throw away their old currency's since it's apart of their country's past. Altough this new form of currency will improve Europe's economy. My teacher said that in a few years the Euro could rival the United State's dollar in Value .
