now, if phasers and phase pistols dont work on the borg why dont the crews of the ships replicate some machine guns?

Think about it:
You're in a technological era where convetional weapons, save torpedoes, are all but history. You have phase/laser weapons and are space explorers. Do you think they're going to realize that conventional weapons would work? And even at that, there is no guarentee that they'd adapt to that with shielding. After all, matter is matter and I'm sure they could, in fact, develop a shielding against high speed projectiles.

those are wise words Los, bearing in mind that then they could only be used for a quick surprise attack and then they would revert to their phaser style conventional weapons.

Well they could adapt to projectile weapons, but I can't see them reverting to them. I think the most proven and effective meathod of getting rid of borg is to decompress the section of the ship they are in...

^ROFL I just saw that episode a few days ago were Chakotay decompressed the cargo bay and a bunch of borgs floated into space

Indeed, a good method and episode.
But---
How would they adapt?
My theory on how the borg shields work is that as soon as they are able to adapt to the certain frequency that the energy weapon is using, the drone is either able to absorb or deflect the energy. With a bullet, there is no energy, just force, and they wouldn't adapt to that unless they carried around bullet proof shields (thinks about borg carrying bullet-proof shields). Nah, wouldn't work.
So what do you think?

They adapt to photon torpedoes, don't they?

nope
edit: additional info
The Borg ship has such a thick outer hull, it can take a quite a few torpedoes, but when the hull is cracked, throw a few quantum torpedoes, heh heh heh.

well if u remember first contact, picard busted out a macine gun and toasted some of those borg so even if conventional weaponns like phasers existed it wouldnt matter (its a matter of life or assimilation). I think they should have some of metalic weapons around in case some borg show up.

radiation they can adapt to.
We can't use the biology claim because we see borgs walking around on the deflector dish. And there is no air in space. Thus - space.
Also, speaking purely theoretically at this point, when you're really IN space, not high altitude/low space orbit like the shuttles do/are, there is an increased amount of radiation due to something like the sun's radiative output or something; I haven't read my astronomy book in months. If the Borg can survive that, then radiation won't be a problem.

Yeah. I think the best anti borg weapon is to fire out the coolant which desintergrates the organic body of the borg. The coolant seen next to the E-E warp core in first contact.

On the whole radiation thing, sorry, but I don't believe your correct on that. The Borg can indeed survive in space, thus proving they do not require oxygen to survive, but they do require a brain. If you were to constantly 'pound' the Borg with radiation, their brains would indeed turn to goo.

nanoprobes own joo.
If you have thousands of nanoprobes in your body that are resistant to gamma radiation, then don't you think that they'd balance out the score?
