Chapter 1

As I stared at the black, gaping hole right in front of me, I reached an infinitely terrifying conclusion-I was staring into myself. I stepped a few steps back, this revelation piercing my mind, my very being with a sense of unimaginable horror. I was empty inside. Empty. I nearly lost my footing as I stepped a few steps back, nearly falling to my doom at the hands of the unmerciful rocks below. They protruded toward the sky as if they were reaching to the heavens to find out the true meaning of their existence, as I was doing now. All my life I knew that something was missing from my being, a puzzle piece absent from a nearly completed jigsaw puzzle that lay waiting on some grand kitchen table made of pine. But to find out that I was empty, totally void of all those qualities and cherished consistencies that define my heritage was a gut wrenching, vomit inducing pain. I was an outsider now, amongst my people. How could I even think to return to my former existence, to go back to a realm of ceatures that are a mirror to me on the outside, yet are composed of so much more than I am? Perhaps my life has been nothing more than a decieving mask, covering my true self with a cloak of black animosity. Perhaps this is the true reason of why I have been a stark contrast to all those who have ever resided in the proximity of my residency. Perhaps, too, this is what has compelled me to embark on this arduous and ungratifying venture of self-discovery. Whatever the reason, I know that the beginning of this dark and soul wrenching chapter of my life commenced with that one day, that overcast, listless day that is now scorched into my mind as a memory of true precedence.
