This has probably been asked a bunch of times...someone told me that the ships dont actually go that fast, but rather warp drives bend space...but I thought that was a co-axial warp drive, and not a standard warp drive...so how do these guys not end up in like 80000 A.D. after spending a good few days at 900c or so (besides the fact that it is just a tv show).

Only theories Mr. Paris. Remember, as we have never actually gone that fast, we have no idea what would really happen.

Well I never thought about this, maybe the warp nacells compensate for the time change.

According to Star Trek: The Return, it is the antigrav generators on a starship that prevent time distortion by keeping you grounded, in effect.

Because the engines are WARP engines. They warp space time (dimensions 1-4) to achieve these velocities. You cant break einstiens theory (but basically law) of relativity, so they go around it. Because of that, normal space time rules dont apply. Dont ask me what rules do, I havent travelled at warp!

Hey Iamstarfleet, you said:

HOW DO ANTIGRAVITY GENERATORS KEEP FROM TRAVELING THROUGH TIME?????

Secondly, why are there antigravity generators on a starship that floats through space, I.E. -- NO GRAVITY MEANS YOU DONT NEED ANTIGRAVITY GENERATORS......

If you want to complain, Lt.BirdGod, then complain to William Shatner. I just read the books!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not complaining, just giving constructive criticism if Mr. Shatner decides to read

Ahhh, I see where Iamstarfleet is going with this. Perhaps he means the Inertial Damping System. The IDS works by creating an opposing force on the entire ship to prevent it being torn apart by massive acceleration forces. Theoretically, the entire ship wouldnt suffer from any acceleration effect. Therefore, if they havent accelerated, they still have the same energy level and therefore relativity isnt applicable. Obviously, its all a bit contradicting because todays science cant comprehend such a system working and the ship would implode under the massive compessive stress!

But then the ship would be subject to relativity, so the ship's hull would age MUCH MUCH faster than the crew, and it would deteriorate in a matter of days, or even minutes, just from sheer age.

Relativity is a very confusing concept.

No the ship wouldnt age, because the IDS works on the ship as well. If it didnt, it'd be ripped to pieces. The whole ship is exempt from relativity.

I'd also quite like to know how there are different speeds of warp travel. It just confuses me, but I've never really been all that interested in Science. Or Astrophysics if that's what you want to call it.

If you go at warp nine, is that the only time you disappear in a flash of blue light? Or is the flash just there to distract you from the fact that it's all just pretend and they don't know how the hell to film a little cardboard Enterprise zooming at impulse around the neutral zone!?!

Sorry to sound so sceptical, but it probably doesn't kmake any sense anyway. My question I mean....

At this point, we can't even slow ourselves down; why do we need to go faster?

lol...In theroy you can't stop in space, unless something causes it to. you can NEVER stay still in space. Unless you bang in something yo would, but other than that you cant stop in space.

Warp Speed is regulated by the warp field which surrounds it. The warp field creats the stability which keeps the warp speed from becoming a time warp.

Forward thrusters. The computer computates the amount of thrust it would require for the ship to come to a dead halt, and fires.
