and also, if the gravity generators are a system that is always on, you know with its own redundant power supply, then how come it can get knocked out like it did on "The Undiscovered Contry" you know, with the two torpedo hits?
In the DS9 episode when Jake and Sisko go off on a quest in that sail ship, Sisko says that the original didn't have gravity, but for conveniance he had installed gravity plating. The sail ship didn't have anything in the way of a power supply aside for the one for the lights, i cant remember if they had a comm system or not.....anyway, with no central power supply, where did the gravity plating get it's power? Does it run off a battery of some sort? It must not be a system that needs much power if that is the case......i dont know....... |
no.... u know how if u bang up a magnet it becomes de-magnitized? kind of like banging up the gravity-plating so it wont work.... u will have to
re-gravitize it....
so if u turn all the ships puwer off then to plating will still be gravitixed unless it has been stired......

Im not quite sure I understand that last one.
Also, in that episode where Tuvok is walking through a corridor and the gravity goes out, there was no direct damage to the gravity plating/system, so the whole theory of gravity going out when it gets "banged up" cant work.....
I understand where you're coming from though.

From the Star Trek TNG Tech Manual
The gravity field itself is created by a controlled stream of gravitons, much like those produced by the tractor beam. In fact, the basic physics is the same. Power from the electro-plasma system (EPS) is channeled into a hollow chamber of anicium titanide 454, a sealed cylinder measuring 50 cm in diameter by 25 cm high. Suspended in the center of the cylinder, in pressurized chrylon gas, is a super conducting stator of thoronium arkeninde. The stator, once set to a rotational rate above 125,540 rpm, generates a graviton field with a short lifetime, on the order of a few picoseconds. This decay time necessitates the addition of the second layer of generators beyond 30 meters distance. The field is gentle enough to allow natural walking without a gravity gradient from head to foot, long a problem in brute force physical centripetal systems.
In the event of EPS failure, the stator will continue to provide an attraction field for up to 240 minutes, though some degradation to about 0.8g will be detected.

Okay, thank you for that very educational answer.
