There's something else to consider regarding the nuking of Hiroshima.

The Germans were very close to perfecting their own A-Bomb at the time. If they had finished it first, who knows what might have happened. As luck had it, we won that particular race.

But if they had thought we did not have the courage to actually use one, the end result may not have been all that different than if they had the first A-Bomb.

So yes, I do think nuking Hiroshima was the right course of action at the time. Nagasaki is debatable, on the other hand. They didn't believe we had more nukes; we could have proven otherwise without destroying another major city.

^^Has anyone seen the play "Copenhagen" performed? It was about the interaction between Heisenberg and Bohr on the night that they took a mysterious walk in a park in Copenahagen. It's fascinating, but they end up with the premise that if Heisenberg had done one simple calculation he could have invented the A-bomb years before the US and Hitler would have destroyed Europe. They discuss the alternate realities that were created by their decision, the principles of quantum physics that they came up with together, and not to mention their interactions with each other. Oooh the show was fabulous but the concept was very interesting.
