Did they use real weapons in the Voyager episode "The Killing Game"? I can't remember.

And to answer any questions that may follow this about "how can you be hurt when you are in the holodeck" is that energy is still energy and energy used in a concentrated projectile manor still hurts just like any other phaser wound.

From what I know, weapons have no effect on holograms. Remember that one episode where the Doctor found out about that one Ensign that died because she and Harry were about to die and he had to choose one of them to save and he chose Harry, well in the shuttle they were in some guy beamed in and shot at all three of them, the doctor wasn't affected.

Matter and energy can go from one state to another, so everything on the holodeck was energy which has been temporaraly made into solid matter. Which cannot be sustained.

It is not solid, It only the the appearence of one. and it can be sustained for as long as the power field holds.

My Verdict:: No. There was one episode, I think its in season 1...The doctor slapped Tom, but tom's hand went through the Doctor.

But, if a hologram is simply made up of light, how can it hold things etc?

Like I said though, outside their usual programming they can't be shot, unless they're on the holodeck and are tied into the holodeck's matrix.

As I understand it, the magnetic fields of the holographic images can be manipulated to make them solid, so a phaser plast would theoretically disrupt an EM field and disperse the photons that the ST writers claim the holograms are made of. However is the hologram was not solid at the time I think the blast would have little effect ont he actual hologram, though it would decimate the active program if the holoemitter was taken out.

I feel your pain. It's like trying to figure out the combination to a safe hidden away somewhere that you are trying to break into.
