Tue Feb 25, 2003 2:59 pm DS9 Season 1 DVD! |
|
I picked it up today, February 25, 2003 at Best Buy for $99.99 American. I haven't watched any of it yet, I'll probably get started tonight. Anyone else who got it, post your thoughts here. It looks great, 7 total DVDs, one of which is a special bonus "DS9 Scrapbook" disc that is a free gift. In the US, I'd suggest purchasing it this week at a Sam Goody, Media Play, or Best Buy, for the special $99.99 price. It will usually go for $109.99 at those stores.
Season 2 on April 1, 2003. I can't wait!

The cheapest place I've found it is $82 at northamericandvd.com. I haven't gotten it yet----not sure whether I'm going to.

Oh you should, Lindley, even though season 1 isn't as good as the rest, its still great stuff. The behind the scenes vinettes are awsome and some of the season 1 eps are pretty good.

Special Feature Report:
The main featurette is the "Deep Space Nine: A Bold Beginning" vinette. It is very interesting, and includes several commentaries from stars, producers and designers. There is also a lot of original concept art shown, overall this was very informative and the best feature on disc 6.
The "Section 31 files" are 5 interesting small character bios narrated by the actors. There is one for O'Brian, one for Sisko, two for Odo, and one for Jadzeea. These are great because they are told by the actors, and the interviews were done in late 92', so it's a interesting perspective the viewer gets, as we see how the actors thought about their characters and situations before the series really got started.
Kira is featured in the first of many "Crew Dossiers". I'm sure we'll get the rest of the cast in the next six sets, but Kira was a good place to start. Most of this feature is done in Kira's (Visitor's) own words over several interviews, one from 92', and two from 99'. The feature covers her character over all seven years, not just season 1. Good stuff, Visitor really knew a lot about her character and her place in ther series.
Michael Westmore has a section about the aliens from season 1, which was very good. He discusses the Cardassians and Bajorans, as well as species like the Tosk, Hunters, Waddi, and others who were seen exclusivly in season 1. It's a bit shorter than I had anticipated, but I'd bet this feature will be present in all seven sets, as each season brought in new makeups and designs.
The other two features were on props, including ones from Quark's bar and from the first season overall. I liked this section, as it draws your attention to a lot of the things we may overlook when watching the episode the prop is in. Good stuff overall.
I haven't watched the special "Scrapbook" disc yet, I'll post a small review tomorrow for that.

You found 5 of the S31 files----there are five more on the other menu. At least, that what someone else said.

I got them now, one on Vash, another on Dax, one on Kira, one on Jake and one on Bashier. My PS2 Controller kept missing the icon. Sorry for the misinformation.

Review for the Special 7th disc, "DS9 Srapbook, Season 1".
Interesting disc, only about 15 minutes long. Interviews with cast and production staff, including Rick Berman. There is a look at makeup and prop design, as well as a tour of ops. I found it to be interesting, I hope that each set has one of these "season scrapbooks".

Ah, just finished the entire season. I'm going to rate each episode coming up, I think I'll start a new thread for it. Maybe Thursday.
