Enterprise has T'Pol running around as a big-breasted Vulcan in a ridiculous catsuit.
Voyager had 7 of 9 running around as a big-breasted Borg in a catsuit and high-heels.
TNG had Troi running around as a not-particularly-attractive Betazed in a low-cut dress and various other outfits that never quite work.
TOS had lots of slave girls, plus Uhura as a not-particularly-attractive black in a ridiculous miniskirt.

It seemed like each series was trying to hit us over the head with a "sex object" character who was usually some kind of exotic alien. (In the 60's, blacks were probably viewed as almost alien to the segregated audience.)

But what about DS9?

Sure, Jadzia Dax and Ezri Dax were good-looking women, and both were aliens, but it's not like they were meant to be extremely sexy characters. They wore Starfleet uniforms and the only drooling admirer was Bashir, but he was meant to be the exception rather than the rule.

So why did DS9 break the mold in this, yet another way?

Leeta reminds me of T'Pol and Seven in two very distinct ways, but as to the main cast, there was no real overt sex object. But Terry Farrell looked damn good, in any costume. Her best showing was in "Let he Who is Without Sin".

As to the difference, DS9 had too much to do in the way of plot arcs, character development, that's everyone on the cast plus 10 or so recurring characters, not one or two memebers of the cast Berman. DS9 had a war to write, alliances to sell, points to make and romaces to build. No time for gratuitous cleavige shots, but they are a welcome change on VGR and some of ENT. Troi was a different story. Beyond Marina Sirtis' beauty was a lautible character, both important to the ship and the crew. She was costumed to "accentuate" her two best assests, save for her telepathy, but she was a deeply developed character by the time the show ended. Seven did get her share of important spots, but often times her sheer precence overshadowed the real point. So far T'Pol has gone no where.

I'll give you Leeta; I had forgotten about her. Of course, she wasn't the Misogynist Braga Ice Queen character that the others were, but she was equally ridiculous and cartoony.

Still, I think something has to be said for the "Trek standard of beauty". On any other show, Jeri Ryan would be seen as somewhat ugly in the face, and the other Sex Object characters would be nitpicked as well. It's funny that they would make Sex Object Ice Queens and hit us over the head with it on a decidedly un-sexy show like Star Trek.

Ryan looks a lot better now that she's normal looking on "Boston Public". She is a fine actress, in my view.

You're crazy. Whenever that "Kimberly" character walks into the same room as Ryan's character, you can see the difference.

I'll stick to originality instead of pigeonholing if you don't mind, and no I'm not going to show you my hall pass either.
