PostThu Jan 23, 2003 8:15 pm    Should old TOS episodes/movies be digitally enhanced?

I was watching the digitally remastered versions of the original Star Wars triology the other day. I think they did an excellent job of updating SW while keeping it true to the original story.

Do you think they should do something similar for TOS, since it gets criticized for its dated special effects, etc.? I remember hearing some complaints about how ENT's ship looks more 'advanced' than TOS' ships because of modern day effects. I would love to see how they could remake the Constitution Class ship with today's technology.

Also, they could add extra aliens in the background (ala Star Wars), replace some of the bad 'extra' actors with today's more professional actors (cameos, anyone?), and enhance sound effects, the look of the ship's computers, etc.

OK for discussion's sake............

Not!!!!!!!!!!!

Why change history? I mean the effects were awesome those days. And are still highly amusing nowadays.

Nope, leave TOS the way it is.

But are the cheesy effects and bad acting hurting us now? Doesn't that sort of thing alienate today's fans, who are raised on CGI and an oversaturated Hollywood/LA?

If today's viewers saw the TOS, perhaps they never would have stood for ENT.

Even though I am a big modern technology buff, I have to disagree. The Original Series should stay with how it was, not remastered by current technology... I, for one, don't actually care about the special effects. It's only the good acting I wanna see. But after all, who am I to say, I haven't even seen TOS.

My answer is...Maybe. But after all, it is called Star Trek: The Orginal Series. And digitally remastering it, it would be called: Star Trek: The Digitally Remastered Series.

If anything in the whole original series should be remastered, it's the aliens. I mean, that episode with the gorn? ouch. It was funny and all, but still ouch. Also the phaser and torpedo fire from the ship. I always thought it was wierd how whenever phaser fire hit something there wopuld be lots of flashes of rainbow colored light.

The original series wouldn't be original if they changed it now

it would be a good idea but still it should be kept the way it is

it would be best if they just made it look as good as they could on DVD and thats all
although there is this one thing that i have found

it's an episode which was never made...for it's time it was too expensive and they just couldn't do it with there technolgie but i could definately be done today

that episode could be made and put onto the season three DVD of TOS as for of a land mark type thing:D

NO!

I'm not a huge TOS fan but I'm against this idea. Star Trek TOS was made back in the 60's and that's how it should like. They're aloud to enhance the picture quality and sound quality but please don't go and add aliens where there weren't any...

I don't think the effects should be remastered with CGI. For one thing, I think CGI is vastly overrated... even in films like the LOTR Trilogy, the effects still don't look real.

By far the most important reason though, is the amount of work that people put in to the original effects, and that should be respected. Imagine how difficult it must have been to do what they did with such a limited budget.

I don't know about re-doing effects, etc... but I do know that the boxed sets on sale in Australia seem to have been digitally cleaned-up and have had their mono soundtracks converted to 5.1.... They look and sound awesome!

I think it's fine to digitally edit some things... like if a wire was showing in the DVD edition, because it would never have been showing on 1960s television. It probably would be good to "clean up" things that show with today's high resolution media that would have been hidden by lower resolution technology in the 1960s, but as I said before, I don't think that effects should be brought up to today's standards because that would alter the integrity of the show.

I would have to agree with Vortex there is no need to change a thing, after all it is a part of HISTORY.

I think TOS should be left alone. They already messed with it too much on the DVD sets that are out now.

Sure, I'd like to see it, and the original forms are out now, to. An update on the special effects (At least in the space shots) would be so awesome, In a Mirror, Darkly and Trials and Tribbilations showed that with current tech, the ships and exterior shots look impressive. I say go for it, tweak the effects shots.

Since I view TOS as an amusing sci-fi thing, I would say no. I don't watch it because of the spoecial effects, but because it is amusing.

It would be fun to see what they would make of it though.

Definitely- though I think other series, esp ENT. should have taken a bit more notice of TOS
