Vanishing Point

Chapter One: Hopeless


Katrine looked up from her mile-high stack of paperwork and shifted her attention to the window, which only rewarded her eyes with the storm of clear beads streaking down the glass pane. She had been filling out forms after forms for about three hours now. It wouldn't have been such a big deal if her ignorant husband had just filled out the divorce papers correctly in the first place. She was growing rapidly tired of putting up with his pitiful excuses. All she wanted was to be rid of him forever, but first she'd have to finish these papers. After a few moments, she stood, stretched, and dropped her warm pen on the table. She dragged her aching body into the large, intimidating kitchen and poured herself a cup of steaming black coffee. She mixed her cream and sugar and took a sip, letting the smooth liquid slide down her throat. The phone rang, waking her from the spell of the aroma and causing her to almost drop the cup of coffee. She looked up at the clock, which read 11:33 PM and after the second ring, she picked up the receiver.

"Bonsoir?"
"Hey Kat, it's Alleura"
"Alleura, why are you calling me at this hour? What is it that could not POSSIBLY until tomorrow..You of all people know how stressed out I am over this paperwork!" Katrine asked, sighing.
"Oh, sorry, I forgot...Well, can I tell you what happened?"
"Go ahead."
"Well, I was just getting in from my date with Xavier and he wanted me to ask you if-"
"If what?"
"Well...If you wanted to double date with his brother, Malcolm..." Alleura paused, waiting while Kat was actually considering acceping Xavier's offer. Then she shook her head, remembering her personal policy about blind dates.

" Alle! You know how I feel about blind dates! Why do you always try to hook me up with men who don't even have jobs?"
"Malcolm has a job, he's a lawyer."
"How old?"
"28."
"Well..."
"Oh come on, your 27, it'll be perfect!" Alleura was begging, and when she begged, it meant she really wanted something else, something for herself.
"Why are you so bent on me dating Xavier's brother?"
"I just...Well, I just thought you'd want to come, we're all gonna go to that new club called Tyme & Again. Friday night at 8 is when Xavier's gonna pick us up in his brand new Santa Fe."
"I suppose.."
"YES!" Alle shouted so loud that Kat had to draw the receiver away from her ear.
"Okay, you got your way, no can I have mine? I need some sleep..."
"Oh,sure,sure...Later then!"
"Aurvoir" Kat hung up and sat down. She sat back down on the couch and thought for a few minutes and then decided to go back to bed, with her coffee. It was hopeless for her to stand up to Leura's way with words. Kat wanted to please her friend, but she also knew that Leura needed to accept no for an answer one of these days. Kat climbed the winding stairs and headed into her luxurious room. She set down her coffee and changed into another nightgown. She slid under the covers of her queen sized mattress and let her mind wander into a dream.



Chapter Two: Courage In The Face Of Friends

Only a few hours later, Kat woke up to a screaming alarm, which she picked up, threw on the floor, and cursed at. She needed more sleep than just 5 hours. She sat up slowly and began to wake up. She stood, made her bed, and walked into the bathroom suite. She turned on the shower by pressing a button and undressed. She stepped under the showerhead and let the warm water envelop her. The phone rang, yet again, and she drew her moist arm out, turning on the speaker phone.

"Kat?"

"This is she." Kat said, sleepily.

"This is Malcolm, Xavier's brother..." The voice said deeply. Kat raised an eyebrow.

"Malcolm, how did you get my number?"

"My brother has it..." The voice said, sighing...

"Is there something I can do for you?" Kat asked, somewhat annoyed.

"Well, I just wanted to call and talk to you for a few minutes, seeing as we've neever been formally introduced, and I don't particularly enjoy blind dates." Kat was surprised at the coincident. She smiled and began to squeeze some shampoo into her hands.

"That's interesting," She said.
"I don't either...I guess that's something we have in common already!" Kat continued...She soaked her hair and then began to shampoo her hair. She rinsed and then continued to wash off the soap. She turned off the shower and grabbed a towel as she listened to Malcolm's deep, strong voice make conversation.

"Well, anyway, I just wanted to give you a call and see how you feel about this date later on tonight. If you ask me, I think we should keep this little phonecall to ourselves. We wouldn't want Alleura or Xavier knowing we cheated." Malcolm said, laughing a bit.

"Right...Well, at least we won't be too nervous when we meet tonight." Kat said, laughing along with Malcolm.

"I'll let you go...I have to get to work anyway..."Malcolm said...

"Oh, alright...later then." She said, smiling to herself and hanging up the phone. She wrapped the towel around her head and grabbed another, wrapping it around her thin body. She left the bathroom and entered her enormous walk-in closet. She chose a nice outfit of a pair of light blue studded jeans and red tank top that said,"The Sky's The Limit". She had bought that shirt on her visit to New York, in the U.S. She had purchased it in one of the souvenir shops. She adored the shirt and wore it often, but today, it was just another shirt in her closet. She put her white and red skater shoes and went downstairs to eat.

Just one thing, when you said, "...could not POSSIBLY until tomorrow..." I'm sure you meant to put a "wait" in there somewhere
