PostSat Feb 01, 2003 4:09 pm    Seq Added! "We Are Klingons" (short story) Voy; T,

Just something I wrote inspired by a Klingon word...

Title: "We Are Klingons"
Author: Voy_Girl
Written: 26/1 2003
Code/s: T, Miral
AN: Based upon the views of Miral in "Barge of the Dead", and young B'Elanna Torres in
"Lineage".
Summary: B'Elanna returns home from her first day at school... A day that would mark her
forever.

"We Are Klingons"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Mother?" Young B'Elanna Torres sniffed behind Miral's brutally turned back. It had only been
B'Elanna's first day, ever, at the local school. She already hated it. And she never wanted to go
back.

When Miral, after another silent moment, turned away from the row of raktjino cups she'd
sorted on a shelf, she noticed her daughter's crushed appearance.

"Tears, B'Elanna. Why?" She stretched the first word until she assaulted the center of it with
dismay. She gave B'Elanna a well-known look that made the sunlit kitchen floor sway
underneath the child's feet.

"When I was about to cross the school yard and go home," B'Elanna squeezed the handle of
the filthy lunch box with her sweaty little hands. She stuttered every now and then, and her
gaze roamed, but the tears had stopped dripping. "And Danny Byrd and his big brother came
behind me. They yelled things and snatched my box."

B'Elanna finished and swallowed hard, hoping that her mother's hard eyes were going to turn
on the Byrd brothers and not to her.

"Did they see you cry?" Miral kneeled down to her daughter's level, brushed a lost autumn leaf
away from the shoulder of her sweater. Then she gently coaxed the metal box out of B'Elanna's
hands and put it on the floor next to them.

"Did they?" She repeated. Watched her daughter's big, scared eyes search for her shoes.
"B'Elanna. You have tear ducts because your father is human. Those children don't see that.
They only see your ridges, and takes you as a full Klingon." She gripped B'Elanna's thin
shoulders. "And a full Klingon would be disgraced to show vulnerability in front of others."

"But..." B'Elanna trailed off, her lower lip shook almost indiscernible.

"tlhIngan maH! 'We are Klingons'!" Miral said forcefully. "You have your ancestors warrior
spirits within you. Be proud of them, B'Elanna. thlIngan maH! Remember it."

She let go of the wide-eyed child after giving the shoulders a shake and a squeeze. With her
head high, as usual, Miral walked out of the kitchen and in to the living room, where she
audibly began to search for something.

Left behind, stood B'Elanna Torres. Torn. Drying tears stained her cheeks, a slight tinge from
the memory her mother's palms made her squirm. Insecure at heart.

She clenched her little fists and suddenly kicked the grey lunch box, which still was next to her,
with the toe of her shoe. Watch it rattle and fall on its long side. As her enemies were meant to
do. thlIngan maH

This is great: I've always wanted to read about B'Elanna's child. Being biracial could be so incredibly difficult: caught between cultures, not knowing where to turn....ooooh I love it keep writing!!

Thanks, I'm making a sequel to it, though it can stand alone...

Disclaimer: I don't own B'Elanna Torres or Kessik IV, but the
way things might have happened and the various other children
are my interpretation.

Note: Based on facts seen in "Lineage".

"Honor and Truth" by Voy_Girl

*

Her wide-open eyes traveled downwards to the big rip on the knee
of her almost new pair of jeans. They narrowed down to a slim,
dangerous slit as she noticed the dark blood which oozed out from
the grazed, sensitive skin underneath the torn material.

"What's the matter? Waiting for someone to help you up?" A
narrow-minded boy teased, clumsily dancing around the kneeling
B'Elanna.

"Too Klingon-like to get up again?" A girl with braids and lots of
freckles added in a singsong voice and associated herself with the boy.

*

B'Elanna had endured a bitter first week ever in school. So far, when
children had teased her, she'd only pushed them away, literally or
verbally and then run away from their red-hot roars of laughter.

*

"I bet she woke up this morning wondering what those things on her
forehead were!"

"Yeah, and then she finally found a mirror... And that's why she's so
pale!"

Two other swaggering, completely human, boys with poor imagination
joined the little circle of mocking grins around 'the different one'.

B'Elanna slowly stood up on shaky legs. She didn't have to take that
kind of treatment from anyone. She shouldn't have let herself be
pushed to the rough ground.

"Does the little knee hurt?" The only girl asked in the same tone she
used when talking to her poor puppy.

"Actually, ms. Freckled," B'Elanna made her young voice as chilly as
she possibly could. "It doesn't."

The four children stared round-eyes, obviously puzzled that their
victim had defended herself in such a controlled, dreadworthy way.

*

As a last chance to win the admiring back, the boy who'd pushed
B'Elanna in the dirty hastily walked up to her discarded and dented
lunch box.

"Don't touch that." He was stopped in mid-move as he bent down to take
the square object.

B'Elanna moved closer to him, and the other children fearfully moved
behind their leader.

In desperate fear of her unusually proud, glowing eyes instead of
idle tears, he straightened up to his full length of three feet
and seven inches.
"I'll touch your stupid box if I want to."

*

The next thing he knew, he was lying on the hard ground with two long
braids and three pair of big eyes too close to his face.

B'Elanna had finally had enough and she'd punched her worst tormentor
back; hard.

The four children knew she watched them run away, and especially he
who ran first; mixed his nose-bleeding with salt, unsuspecting tears.

*

B'Elanna suddenly became aware of the chilly wind caressing her bare
arms, as well as the protruding pain in her right knee.
It was like all other emotions had been shut down while she fought for
herself; for her returning honor.

She had for the first time discovered how it felt to get uncontrollably
mad, and how she reacted to it.

Sighing into the wind she faced, she picked up her grey box and began
her limping walk through the autumn atmosphere, knowing she'd have to
explain it all to her mother when she got home.

Great story! Young B'Elanna is so amusing, but I don't think I'd want to meet her in a sandbox when I was a wee lad.
