PostTue Jan 21, 2003 3:38 am    This isn't my fathers star trek...

Quote:
Y'know. It occurs to me that B&B did at least keep their promise with Enterprise. It certainly isn't my father's Trek.

It isn't interesting, it isn't exciting, it's isn't going where no one has gone before. Heck, it isn't even worth the time that goes into making it.

My father's Trek was bold and risk taking. It wasnt afraid to shock or challenge its audience, whether that was with the gaudy decor or the thought provoking storylines.

My father's Trek was written by veterans of World War 2 who knew what it was to see humanity destroy itself and knew the importance of trying to build a better tomorrow. These people had seen action, and they had seen the stark reality of humankind having to make a moral choice and a stand.

That kind of background makes a person zest for life, and appreciate beauty. It's a can do kind of world.

Enterprise is definitely not any of those things.

Enterprise really is not my father's Trek.

It revels in complacency and worships ignorance. It considers a dithering, petulant teenage personality who insists on bringing a silver service waiter service out into deep space and maintaining the trappings of power, the height of sophistication. Enterprises Captain is a mirror of Treks current leader lacking in vision, conviction and ability, and consumed with the machinations of its own elitist clique. Archer is a man big on posturing (we are all very pleased) but without out any true self worth to back it up.

Enterprise is vacuous at best.

Nothing characterizes the vacuous spirit of Enterprise more than that the airhead Valley girl translator, Hoshi, and grinning mute, Mayweather, who have nothing to add to either the scope of the show, or the dynamic of the group. They serve only to provide inadequacies when the plot requires it, and to inexplicably not know their jobs whenever the plot dictates it. They are instruments of convenience they are not characters.

Nature abhors a vacuum, so the old adage goes, and that certainly seems to be true of Enterprise, one of the most resolutely devoid of any redeeming features kind of vacuums I have ever before encountered.

Dear me that Trek has come to this. It reminds me of that immortal line from Raising Arizona [Enterprise] is a barren place where my seed could find no purchase. I submit that should an original idea ever surface at chez Trek, it would be murdered at birth anyway.

I dont ask for much. I ask merely to be entertained. I care not a jot for continuity or canon. I mind not if the cast is naked or fully clothed. I ask merely for thoughtful exciting stories told with flair, pace and conviction.

I ask to be entertained, first and foremost.

Enterprise cannot even manage that. There were moments, flashes of great things. But I think in retrospect, like a dying star that has used up all its full, what I was witnessing was merely the flickering, before the final death rattle.

I ask just one thing of Trek of Enterprise. Do not implode. Do not look inward, like the stinking black hole which is the heart of those currently in charge. Do not wallow in sub par miserablism, sucking all hope and goodwill out of what audience remains. I ask that you have the courage to shine one last time. Burn brightly. Use what little fuel you have left and go nova.

Explode in one glorious firestorm. Let the universe know what Trek is made of, so that we can ponder on happy reflection and bask in its after glow and say Yes, I knew Trek. And it was a thing to behold.

But not like this, my friends. Not like this.

How do you know it is his son. I am pretty sure he means the trek his father used to watch. And it has too many grammer errors to be him. In any case my previous statement still stands

Wow, that is quite a condemnation of 'Enterprise'. Is the writer (whoever he is) angry because Enterprise is boring?

I would say more of fed up at the overall direction B&B is taking ENT. Nowhere.

Lieutenant: "I think we can handle one little girl. I sent two units, they're bringing her down now."

Agent Smith: "No lieutenant, your men are already dead."

He isn't. You misunderstood. For that matter, the original poster on TBBS isn't either. Its a metaphor.

In any case, I understand where they're coming from. Enterprise could do with plenty of improvement. Like, for instace:

-Give the ship a mission. Right now, they seem to be wandering randomly.
-Give the cast equal parts. Its become almost a running joke how few lines Mayweather has. ("Wow---he's had two whole sentences this episode!")
-Start a few more long-term arcs, and focus more on the ones we already have.
-Make Archer more convincing. I seriously doubt that Earth would send out an ambassador who has as much self-doubt as Archer seems to. Well, maybe that isn't the right word---but who takes their dog to an alien diplomatic meeting?
-Catsuits are not logical.

I agree with you, Lindley. It seems like the Enterprise writers have already grown bored with the show.

I think making the new Enterprise was a big mistake. Theres already been 4 series coming from 4 completely different points of view and eras and yet still they try to make ANOTHER spin-off that was a really long shot that somehow caught the eyes of the producers. If i had any say into it i would say that they should all just let Star Trek die and let us remember the way it was and not some generic show that keeps coming back to make the Star Trek vision be blurred.

Kirk, many people said the same thing when TNG first aired. But TNG, DS9 and Voyager all surpassed TOS. It's true that Enterprise won't be surpassing any of them, but it is possible that the next Trek series could be good. If the franchise dies, we'll never know.

Archer's not an ambassador you have Ambassadors and chief diplomatic officers for that job

I believe there was a reference in one of the episodes to Archer's being "a trained diplomat". Whether he likes it or not, he is an ambassador on a regular basis. Anyone who makes first contact with an alien race on behalf of all humanity is an ambassador. Whether he is a good one is another matter.

It's not the fact that ENT was a bad idea but the fact that B&B twisted it into a "Clueless" spin off. It can still be saved short of a couple maricles.
