------------Chapter Five-The Road Never Traveled.

"Taya, oh my dearest Taya, we could raise the child." My mom said, trying to force a smile in this tense moment.

"Momma? What sort of life could I offer my child?" I asked, looking up at her with my crying blue eyes.

I looked into my mother's blue eyes, not unlike my own, and saw that she was crying inside. Her cerulean blue eyes-that once shone like the sun-looked dull and distant.

"I-I don't know." She said, barely above a whisper.

"Then you know I have to do this."

"Look Taya, you can't just hand over a child, it's not that simple." My Daddy explained, taking my delicate hand in his.

"I know it isn't going to be easy, but this is something I have to do." I proclaimed, firmly enough to convince them that this was my choice, not there's.

"Then it's settled. Taya, you are to come to my home tonight at midnight, the servants should be deactivated. I want the people you tell of your 'condition' to be but a select few." She explained, saying that me being pregnant was like having the common cold.

"I will be informing our close friends, they will wonder where Taya is." my mom said.

"That you may do. Come on Harvey, WE have MUCH to discuss." She expalined, and she walked out of the room.

"Taya I'm so sorry, I-I really do think your a beautiful child." He said, and then shot a nervous glance at my Dad and left the office.

"Well, we better inform our groupees." My mom joked, but I only stood up, and beamed myself back home.

Later That Day..............

"Hello B'Elanna, Tom, amd Miral." I heard my mom greet.

My Mom had invited everybody from her 'senior staff'-well ex-senior staff- to explain my absence. With the Paris family arriving everybody was in the dinning room, including me.

"So....breifing in the Captain's Mess?" Joked Tom, but few even smiled.

"No Tom, I wish it were as simple as that." My mom said, and Tom turned serious.

"What I am about to say doesn't leave this room, and unfortuanatly some are aware of what part of the reason is your here." She explained, gazing at Miral, and Miral easily put two and two together. She stood up and slamed her hands on the table, I stood to.

"Dammit Taya, what did he do to you now?" She asked, her eyes burning with a long-buried rage.

"Miral please....just sit." I said, my voise hoarse from crying.

"No! I sat back and let what happened fade away! But it still haunts me! Knowing what he did to you....and....what you did for me! i can't stand it anymore!" She raged and her mother stood and put her hand on Miral's shoulder.

"Kathryn what the hell is this all about?" She asked, in fear that her daughter would blow.

"Taya...well....she was...violated. I'm just going to put it like that. Now....she is....with child." My Mom explained.

Miral shook her head, and muttered something in Klingon under her breath, something that only her mother understood.

"That...that...errr.....and to think I did nothing!" Miral said in a voice so filled with anger it brought tears to my eyes.

"Miral, you did all that you could." I said firmly.

"No I didn't Taya. I am without any honor what so ever. I showed the ultimate weakness and now you pay the price." She said, and-from what I could tell-she had tears of rage burning her eyes.

I couldn't stand it, everybody looking at me, so I ran.

I bolted upstairs and locked my bedroom door behind me. I didn't like the situation I was in, and the way Tuvok eyed me like it was all my doing.

'He has no right to judge me. Who does he think he is?' I thought to myself, as I heard a soft knock at my door.

"What do you want?" I spat, glaring at the door.

"Taya, it's me, your mother, can I come in?" She asked, in a soft calm tone.

"No Momma, just please....leave me alone." I said.

I heard her turn around and go back downstairs.

In the Dining room.......

"So, what do we do now?" B'Elanna asked, breaking the nerve-racking tension.

"I don't know B'Elanna I just don't know." Kathryn said, gazing off into space.

"I say we get Hewlett, and make him drown in his own blood." Miral said, and her mother shot her a stern warning look.

"Miral, violence isn't the answer." Chakotay replied.

"How can you say that? After what he did to Taya? You would just stand by and let him get away with this? You were born a coward, and you'll die a coward!" Miral hollered, and her mother had enough.

B'Elanna stood up and struck Miral hard on her left cheek, and Miral stumbled backwards. Miral could see the rage and fury in her mother's Klingon eyes, and she only became more defiant. She stood up, untill she was inches away from her mother.

"Take back your words." B'Elanna told Miral.

"Never."

"Miral, just do as your mother says." Tom piped up, but B'Elanna clearly didn't want him involved.

"Why? So we can all go to sleep with false hope in our hearts?" She asked.

"Umm....If I may....." The Doctor piped up.

"Proceed Doctor." Tuvok said.

"Could it be that the tension between Captain Torres and her daughter is the cause of guilt? Miral, I was present when Taya told her parents what happend, all of it. So you feel guilty because you think you failed to protect Taya. And Captain Torres, you don't want Miral to use those words because those were the sorts of words that got you into trouble. Am I right?" He asked, overly pleased with his analisys.

"I guess so...." B'Elanna admitted.

"Well I don't!" Miral proclaimed defiantly.

"Then what do you think?" B'Elanna asked.

"I think that...I should not be here right now. I should be with Taya." Miral answered.

"She's not letting anyone in. Not even me." Kathryn said sadly.

"No, she's not letting you in. Look mom, Taya did a very selfless thing for me. I was with her when this happened." Miral expalined.

"Did...he...do..." B'Elanna stammered.

"No mother, it happened to Taya instead." Miral annouced, and B'Elanna shuttered.

"We owe Taya lots Kathryn. You went and raised her well." B'Elanna complimented.

"That we did." Chakotay replied.

"I remember when I was younger-even though I was a scientist-my mother told me stories of forest spirits, she called them nymphs. My Taya, my poor Taya, is closest thing that humanity will ever come to that mythical creature." Kathryn explained.

"Remeber when Miral and Taya first met?" B'Elanna asked, smiling at the memory.

"How could one forget?" Chakotay replied, almost laughing.

"Taya was two months, and Miral a little over a year. We put Taya on her little blanket in the living room, and Miral crawled right up to her. She looked at Taya with so much intrest I thought she'd never blink." Kathryn began.

"Then Taya reached up an stroked Miral's forehead ridges, then laughed. Miral of course thought that Taya was the oddest creature on four legs. About an hour later Miral wondered into the kitchen, and got to close to the hot stove. Taya wriggled and followed her in, and just started bawling to get our attention. She's saved her quiet a few times." B'Elanna explained.
