In the TNG episode "relics" where scotty was retrieved, Scotty says "I bet kirk had the old ship put out of mothballs jsut to find me. When he was lost for 75 years. But we now know that Scotty sees kirk die on the Enterprise B in Generations. So how could they take the old enterprise out of mothballs when he knew the new ship was up and running. Furthermore how could kirk find him when Kirl was in the nexis? Like I always say, Generations was the worst of the movies

Well, I can't remember seeing the episode, so I don't think that generations is a bad movie.

It wasn't a bad movie in and of itself, but it really did fudge the timeline a lot. I think Generations would have been great on its own, and the introduction of Data's emotion chip was really important, so they had to make it. But you're right: the timelines just don't match up. There are a lot of those little descrepencies: we should start a "Nitpicker's Guide to Star Trek." (Have you ever seen those? X-Files has one! )

Remember that when "Relics" was first aired in early 1993 as part of TNG's Sixth season, Kirk was not dead in the Trek Universe, nor had his time or circumstance of death been determined. A year and a half later when Generations came out the Scotty comment from "Relics" did become a discrepency, but the writers surely didn't care as it should be. You can't worry about every line ever uttered on Trek when making a feature film.

Acctualy, about the emotion chip, I think the writers of Star Trek paniced when they realized what they had done. They took away from data the only thing that built up his character. The longing for emotion. Notice that in First Contact it wasn't activated half of the movie and in Inserection he "didn't take it with him" There was no mention of it in Nemesis at all. Transfering Data's memories to B4 was like cloning data. His pathways are developing. He already has some of data's memories at work. When they develop he will virtualy be Data. So it was kinda like an elaberot way to get rid of their former mistake. Now there is no emotion chip.

I noticed the absense of the emotion chip in Nemesis as well, particularly when Geordi (I think it was him) asked Data how he felt about the whole B4 thing, and Data was like, "I feel nothing." I remember thinking, "Why the heck doesn't he have his emotion chip turned on? Wouldn't he want to explore the emotions he could be having?"

Here's my thoughts on the orriginal question here. When Scotty came out of the Transporter after being in the buffer for 75 years he was dissoriented. Kirk being one of his best friends for many years, naturally he would be one of the first things Scotty thought of. So obviously Scotty forgot Kirk was dead (as Scotty knew anyway) and asked about him

I've been doing research and found out what happened. Lenerd Nimor was origonaly casted but he wouldn't do such a small part. So they grabbed scotty because it was a last minute thing. They never had time to even consider that the "Relics" episode ever happened

You know "Relics" comes before Star Trek Generations, so Kirk's fate was not decided at the time of the episode's creation. Must we go over this again and again?

On a "Data"/emotion chip note: In "First Contact" he had developed the ability to turn it off. Then in "Insurrection" it malfunctioned and he went nutty and started ruining their cover, remember? Didn't they remove it then? I could be remembering this incorrectly but I think that's what happened.

I don't think any of the star trek movies have lived up to a typical star trek fan, simply because it was made with the general public as it's target audience.
And to the original post, there is an inconsistency.

I really think they should worry more about keeping people who are already fans satisfied and not worry about the general public. If the movie is good, word will spread and people will check it out.

They haven't learned that lesson. Braga and Berman have shot themselves in the feet again (by this time they're probably walking around on their ankles) with Enterprise. They tried to mainstream it but it was a complete disaster. The mainstream audiences won't watch it because it's Star Trek, and the Trekkies won't watch it because it isn't Star Trek.

Wow those were some really nice catches, with the timeline and all and his emotion chip. I noticed that too in nemesis. They didn't say anything about it. But that movie was lacking in alot of respects.
