PostMon Dec 09, 2002 10:46 pm    What is the purpose of Transwarp?

If you can have warp 1-9.9 (9 repeating to infinity), theoretically, you can go as fast as any transwarp engine, because the warp curve would just go up forever...so, what is the purpose, is transwarp more efficient?

From the Star Trek Encyclopedia...The Borg used sophisticated transwarp conduits, allowing them to travel at least twenty times faster than warp-powered vessels.

All starfleet ships would have transwarp if Montgumery Scot hadn't sabatoged the first field test of the prototype moddle of starfleets first transwarp engin (Star Trek III: the search for spock)

Not quite, they had multiple transwarp computer units in storage like the ones that scotty stole. They were used to test the transwarp drive units on unmanned ships. It's probbably a good thing that scotty sole those chips, because by doing so he may have saved the life of the crew of the Excelsior. Shortly after the excelsior stalled out in front of the station, starfleet launched it's first unmanned transwarp drone. The transwarp field collapsed less than a second after jumping to transwarp, and vaporised the drone. If the excelsior had made the jump, it would have been destroyed. All starfleet's attempts at transwarp failed, and the progect was abandoned. The excelsior was going to be scrapped because it didnt work , but it was decided that the ship, being the most advanced in starfleet at the time, would be rebuilt and converted into a normal warp drive ship.

More like Jetrel throwing a hissy fit. So since Voyager has come back you think Seven's knowledge will allow starfleet to reintroduce transwarp?

Cause it's a real thin line, but that's your choice to make.
The question at hand, help me understand, is this your plan?

Very plauseable possiblity, maybe grounds for a new series with Transwarp

well i think transwarp is too big of a jump, but future classes of ships may be able to go in the warp 9.999 region

I dont think they would need much help getting up to that though, they're pretty close to that as it is. Supposedly the defiant has a maximum cruising speed of warp 9.989, and the promethius is supposed to be 9.999 already.
Even if they found out how to produce an effective transwarp system, I dont think they would make all their ships transwarp capable. They would have to completly redesign the existing ships in order to bring them up to speed. They would probably rebuild the most current ships (galaxy, soverign, promethius....etc...), and leave all the older ones (miranda, oberth, excelsior...etc...) with normal warp drive. If they DO get transwarp figured out though, I hope they refit at least ONE of the excelsior class ship to transwarp specifications, preferably the original excelsior if it still exists. That way they could finally say thet the great experiment (from the search for spock) had succeeded.

^Well, if you ask me, pretty soon Starfleet is going to discover an efficient way to time travel entire ships (Premonition Class, Wells Class) so i think most ships are going to be designed around a time travel decive so we wont see transwarp around for long except for probably the older ships not worthy of being built around a time travel engine.

defiant can only hold warp 9.5 for 12 hours. small ships do have disadvantages

the prometheus is the fastest in the fleet, although not confirmed it is estimated to be warp 9.99.

oh, and fastest in the fleet was confirmed from voy:message in a bottle, the emh mark II stated. and they were going warp 9.9, but it is possible she would beable to do a little more flat out, at least warp 9.975, faster than an intrepid.

and when starfleet will have ships going warp 9.999, they will be 3 times faster than warp 9.99!

But an intrepid can go 9.975 already, so how can the promethius cruising at 9.975 be faster then an intrepid?

no, all we know is that the prometheus goes faster than anything in the fleet, so it would be at least warp 9.975. sorry i did not phrase the post very well.

Transwarp has the same purpose as warp. To make a ship go really fast. Transwarp just goes even faster than regular warp drive. Think of it as a mere step below warp 10 (infinate velocity). Basically: Really, really, really fast. In fact, the Borg can get across the galaxy in minutes using transwarp. It would take regular warp drive about 300 years to do that.

Think of it this way:

If a ship were to travel at warp 9.99999999999999999999 that would have to be faster than warp 11.

See my point?

And I'm pretty sure that warp speed operates on something like an exponential scale. (e.g. Warps 1 and 2 are closer to the same speed than warps 8 and 9).

Transwarp is much faster than warp 1 to 9, it is said that if a speices break transwarp barrier they are much more advanced than warp.... its kind of like right now we have only broken the sound barrier, and our next advance is to break the light barrier.

I don't know about that, a jump from sound to light is a BIG jump.

More realisticly, it would probably be to reach a high Mach number.

Yes, but no matter how many nine's you put behind the decimal point, (9.9999999999...............) You are STILL below ten. The warp curve can only go so far. You can get really close to warp ten, infinite velicity, but you can never touch it. Transwarp allows you to go beyond infinite velocity.
