Sulu must have been a great captain since Starfleet Command honored his contributions to space exploration by dislaying his photograph at Command in San Francisco.
Also, Chakotay was sponsored by a Captain Sulu for admission to Starfleet Academy in 2350, but it was never established that it was Hikaru Sulu who had sponsored him. If that were the case, Sulu would have been 113 years old. Not impossible considering McCoy was 137 years old when Enterprise D was launched but you would imagine that Sulu would have been more than just Captain by that point in his career (60 years as Captain?).

I would have loved to see a Cpt. Sulu series. He would have been great. I like George Takei and the way he played Sulu in ST VI and in "Flashback" really impressed me. It could have been fantastic. And I would not have minded if they had kept Ensign Tuvok aboard... The two worked well together in "Flashback"

Sulu was as good as Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway, ect., but in different areas, just as, I hope, everyone thinks that Rodenberry was a genius, but so was Einstein, but in different areas.

I think Cpt. Sulu was good even though we didn't see much of him in his official "captain" capacity. I still believe he was great since he served with Cpt. Kirk for many years. When you serve with a great captain, you learn a lot just like in any job. If you work with someone who's good at what he/she's doing, you learn from them and then you can become just as good, if not better.
