It's puzzling isnt it? You would think that since space allows a ship to easily point and move in any direction that when a ship meets another ship one of them would be pointed in some crazy direction, like upside down and sideways. I guess they do it simply to make it less confusing to the viewers, although in this case it seems to be causing confusion.....

Actualy their is a very logical explination, all ships are oriented to the cilectial disk(All planets are on a lane anll universes are on a flat plane. if you look at the galaxy frome above it looks round, but if you look at the galaxy from the side it looks like a straight line. so all the ships align to that flatness.

True, but the galaxy is not like a sheet of paper, there is plenty of room to move up and down, and there are a whole mess of planets which dont conform to the rotation effect. Therefore at some point you should have one ship meeting another which is completely askewed.

There is a very simple explanantion to this...I heard somewhere that all starships interface with subspace beacons before they meet. This correctly orients the ships so that they are "right side up".

That makes sense, but then how do the beacons tell which way is up? I guess they could determine which way they are pointed based on the stars. But even in the frenzy of battle, like many of the skirmishes on DS9, almost all the ships are facing right way up, and fighting on a horizontal plane. The only ones you see upside down are the ones that have been destroyed or crippled.

this tends to agree with Captain Michael Pike's theory, once the ships beacon goes offline, this it does not know 'up'

Well...it was a better answer than it's cheaper for the FX team to make them all "fly" the same way. LOL!

They have ships right side up just so things don't look so weird, I think.

There really is no excellent explanation for why ships meet both with the same side up, but in regular space, with only one ship, we can assume that the view is just oriented that way.

because there is no up side to side or down and they have stablizers in all starships
