What i wonder is how does the universal translator automatically know all these alien languages. Like when the enterprise meets a new alien the translator automatically knows their language. How is that possible?

i have no idea how they work, from what i have heard a few video games (counterstrike, everquest) have tried translators but they never seem to work well because people use acronims (sp?). I don't see how this would work, cause alien languages prolly have slang or that would be hard to translate, also what if they have words that couldn't be translated into english.

I know how they work
First the computer listens to a languige then it quicly decides thrue it's knowledge of outher races and gestures that the ailiens doing what the basic idea is then it figure by speach the ailiens nouns verbs ect, then once all thouse are heard the new language can be strung together by the computer to form frases, but only basic ones at first, as more of the languige is heared more can be deturmind untill the entire languige is maped. it's how the origanal people to study africa's many diferent populations learnd african, only the computer dose it faster, much faster.

i dont know maybe it just exstrapolates the known languages similar to the the new one and comes up with a somewhat acurate translation i guess

Ok that answers my first question...but i was thinking again and how does the translator translate the lip movements of the people? Even though he would sound like he was talking in english his mouth would still be moving like he was talking in his own language. I guess the computer could change it if they were talking over the view screen but what about when theyre face to face????
