Well, one program you can use is called "Starship creator", but that only lets you take existing designs and tweak them to your own preferences.

I recommend you don't buy starship creator unless you have the game dominion wars in which you can import ships into, the ship building is fun but you can't control the missions which is annoying

I don't actually use any programs to make my own starship designs, I prefer to use the simplicity of paper and pen. I've got hundreds of little drawings/designs lying around.

the only problem with that archilles, is that they don't look quite as nice as 3d computer models - but I agree, there is more flexablity on paper, although their are many rewards to using the computer...
i have often wanted to create starship graphics, but I can't... don't know how, or really even what to use... plus i can't draw on the computer...

I used 3d max to model a couple of nice cars, you can use it for pretty much anything. I have downloaded a couple of ship models in the past
