PostThu Dec 19, 2002 9:09 pm    WHY THE BAD ATTITUDE TOWARDS DS9???

Hey Trekkers!

I've noticed many people saying that DS9 will not have it's own movie, because the studio's have a bad attitude towards the show. Can someone tell me why???

I think it's because nobody wants a DS9 film. There was an article about it in a magizine.

But it's like love or hate, now is that real or fake?
Cause it's a real thin line, but that's your choice to make.
The question at hand, help me understand, is this your plan?
I think I can, can I think, then I think I can.

The reason some people don't want a DS9 film is because they are afraid that the current Powers That Be couldn't do the series justice. Berman was peripherally involved in making DS9, but Behr and Moore were the real creative forces behind it, and Braga wasn't involved at all. Now with Behr and Moore both having left Star Trek, well....

In any case, the ratings were never as good as they could have been. DS9 was never the only Trek show on. It overlapped with TNG, and when that ended, many people jumped straight to Voyager. Its probably also relevant that DS9's first two seasons were rather weak. The often-voiced misconception that they are "boldly going nowhere" all too often seemed true. It wasn't until season 3 that the show really found its direction, and went on to greatness. Nevertheless, DS9's ratings, taken seeason by season, were higher than either VOY or ENT has had.

The reason there will never be a DS9 film is that the writers finished each story arc with such a finality as to say, "That's it. There's no more." Whereas the other series, TNG and Voyager, were left open ended. The story continues for them, now it's just filling in the gaps.

As pointed out before, a lot of the people behind DS9 (tptb) have moved on to other things. A sad state of affairs to be sure but nonetheless...

Aside from that, what would the movie be about? A lot of the crew is scattered or dead...what could possibly bring them back together? A DS9 movie would be too...situational. Meaning it would be focused on too many people and things at one time. What worked in the series on TV could never be crammed into an hour and a half.

That's my opinion...I wouldn't mind if DS9 came back to tv....

What we really need is to have Kira and/or O'Brien cameos in Trek XI. Possibly Bashir, too.

With the finality that Nemesis presented us (seems this will be their last journey together), I wouldn't be surprised if the next movie was Voyager. Since the crew is home (on Earth). I think there is the good chance that we may see O'Brien, Barclay and/or Bashir,Bev Crusher as cameos.

Psst. There's a DS9 hardcover coming out in April called "Unity" which might interest you......

(Provided you've read the rest of the relaunch first)

Can I just butt in at this point and say that I never really liked DS9 until the war? Thanks.

Bye.

No I must admit that i agree (Many of you probrably know this so please bare with me and try not to fall asleep ) I originally thought the concept of the series being based on the station, when I watched the show's Pilot Emissary Part 1-2 I was rather disappointed. Season 1 had about 3 good episodes in my opinion, season 2 again quite disappointing but I watched the finale of Season 2 and to my astonishment they left us on quite an Exciting cliffhanger [SEE the Episode "The Jem'hadar"season 2-"The Search 1-2 Season 3] From there Deep space Nine got better and better in my opinion but I think those ppl who do not like ds9 are ppl who have seen earlier on episodes and decided to judge the series on 1-2 lame episodes. My Advice to those ppl is Watch some good episodes like

Far Beyond the Stars-Season 6
In The pale moonlight-Season 6
Sacrafice of Angels-Season 6

and If you still don't like DS9 after that well you clearly just weren't meant to like it. Obviously this advice does not apply to all some people obviously may have seen later DS9 episodes that many DS9 fans think are the best episodes.

Ok Please tell me you have had someone confirm that Sisko returns and not that you have assumed his return because of the frontcover I also get annoyed with these books if they are non-canon to the series and films, say if a ds9 film is released and none of the avatar book events took place that would annoy me

The editors tend to stay tight-lipped about such things, but I think its not an unreasonable assumption. At the very least, he must play *some* part in the story.

Yeah then again it could be a very minor part such as coming to kassidy in a dream and telling her something.

Another reason imho why some trekkies/trekkers did not like ds9,was because it was quite dark...like say babylon 5.And they were used to the "happy endings" of Tos and TNG,you know,99 % of the episodes eveyrthing works out ok,episode ends with a joke cracked on the bridge, credits roll etc.Whereas in ds9,there wasnt really much...cheerfull episodes was there ? It was more...real.Strife,conflict,pain etc.I know it hurt me...some of us retreat to Tv to get away from real life...not relive the pain of it.But i still think ds9 was great and mature

Another reason that tends to question the integrity of Berman and Braga is they wanted to pay more attention to Voyager because they wanted to try a female captain. They also wanted to screw over Avery Brooks because they couldn't stand the fact that he is black, and Star Trek is supposed to be a "white" show. So they got the whitest guy they could find for ENT, and it failed. They got their just desserts.

I dont know about the rest of you but i like DS9 over all the rest. Maybe because its the most political. Anyone that says DS9 was bad did not see the 5th-6th-and 7th sesons!

Or the 4th, or the 3rd.....

People who say it was boring more often then not have only seen season 1, *maybe* some of S2.
