The deflector dish on a starship is used to push all of the small bits of space dust and debris out of the path of the ship, allowing it safe passage at warp speeds without being turned into proverbial swiss cheese. Since it is such a vertisile device however, it can also be used to emit beams and pulses of various energy modulations. Clearing debris is it's primary function though.

I'd have to concure with the Admiral's decription. Yeah, it stops the ship from becoming swiss cheese.

It deflects dishes that are floating in space and by doing so prevents them from smashing against the starships hull which would make a mess...wots that you dont think thats the reason?
Lol, no that link is pretty cool in explaining it...when the Enterprise-E ejects her dish does that mean she was vulnerable to space debris? would she still have been able to use her shields?

as far as I remember shields go off before the ship enters warp. I wonder what series that was again where they beamed someone out just before the ship entered warp. Must have been TOS.........hmm, I'll look into it.

It must have been TOS, because in nemesis the enterprise was in warp when fired upon. And the shields were operational.

It moves things in front of the ship while it is in warp speed. That way nothing will damage the ship while its in warp.

im sorry but u r all wrong, a deflector dish limits the g-force exposure to which the crew of a ship is exposed to when jumping to wapr eg

--------------------->Deflector
<-----------------G-force pressure!

the deflecotr acts as a barrier, stopping the crew from bieing turned it mush! every time that idiot picard yell's "Engage!!!!!!!!!!!"

I'm sorry, but your wrong and everyone else is right. Youre getting confused with the inertial dampening field, which does exactly what you say. The deflector is a low powered force field that repels micrometeors and the like. On first contact, the Enterprise would just need to power up its shields to go to warp (Its like a fine net would protect you from mosquito's and so would an A1 Abrams tank! Get it?)
