PostFri Dec 13, 2002 10:27 pm    Firefly Cancelled

That's it. Firefly has been cancelled. They're allowing the current episodes to be completed, but Fox is not ordering any more.

This REALLY sucks. Firefly was turning into the best show of the decade. We'll continue seeing it at least through December, and Fox has promised to air all the episodes made to date.

There is a possibility it could be picked up by another network, however. UPN and Showtime both have good track records with Scifi shows, and UPN is currently running another show created by Joss Whedon, Buffy. Visit http://fireflysupport.com for more info on how you can help.

Aww, that was actually a pretty good show. It had alot of potential. Hopefully someone will pick it up.

I was actually rather ambivalent about the concept, too. A western in space? An anti-Trek show?

And then, when Fox stupidly decided they didn't like the pilot and ordered another one (the original is showing this Friday, 8pm), I thought it was probably just as well. Heck, after seeing the replacement pilot, my first thought was "its interesting enough to check out one or two more episodes".

But stick with it I did. And the latest batch of episodes has been extrodinary----"Ariel" put the show on my must-watch list. "War Stories" reminded me of such classic episodes as B5's "Intersections in Real Time" and TNG's "Chain of Command". And the latest offering, "Objects in Space", proves that bounty hunters don't have to be Boba Fett clones (no pun intended).

I'm really looking forward to seeing the original pilot this week. From all accounts its much better than the replacement pilot they ended up showing, and if they'd showed this first----and maybe did a bit more advertising----the show would probably still be going strong.

^Its not going to be on one day. That's what "cancelled" means. Well, unless UPN picks it up. It will be on tomorrow, though.

Its possible, I suppose. But when was the last time you saw reruns of Space: Above and Beyond (another scifi show cancelled prematurely by Fox)?

Think about Dark Angel, when that was cancelled it was firefly that replaced it. That was around 6 months ago... The sad thing about FF is that it did not gain much viewers which was why it was cancelled.

I can list the reasons why it didn't get viewers!

-Friday night Timeslot of Death. The only show *ever* to succeed in that timeslot was The X-Files. All other shows in the Friday/8pm timeslot have failed on Fox, including Dark Angel (which was moved there from another slot).

-Fox replaced the two-hour pilot with something more "action-oriented". As a result, we had zero introduction to the characters; they were just there. Most people say that "The Train Job", which Fox aired first, was the worst episode of the run; the original pilot, which was aired last, was very good.

-There was very little advertising. Yes, Scifi Channel showed many FF ads before the series started, but they were advertising the original, REPLACED pilot. Viewers who tuned in didn't get what had been promoted. Other than those, I only saw *one* ad for the show on Fox the whole time it was running. Granted, the only other thing I watch on Fox is 24. By contrast, there was frequent advertising for John Doe.

-Preemption. The best episode of the run, IMO, was "Ariel". A LOT of people were impressed by that. So what did Fox do? Preempt the show for the next two weeks. Then, when it comes back with another really good episode but almost no advertising TELLING people its back, they scratch their heads at the low ratings and cancel it.

It seems clear to me that someone at Fox wanted the show to die.

This is bad. Initial rumors are saying UPN has decided to pass on picking up Firefly. I admit I had suspected as much, but its not good to have it confirmed. I guess I'll unsticky the thread now.

Who knows how long it could be until the next awesome show appears?

What about the WB?

Or even NBC?...Nah, I haven't seen NBC air a SF show in ages.

ABC? Maybe...

CBS? Slight chance...

At least have it on the Free channels so that I can watch it. I can only get UPN, WB, FOX, ABC, CBS, and NBC. I only get those channels. No cable, no satilite. Just airwaves (kinda like AM and FM waves.)

www.fireflysupport.com has now targeted the Scifi channel. However, I doubt that'll work----Scifi channel recently decided that JMS' new show, "Polaris", was "too science-fictiony" for them.

In any case, Scifi channel seems determined to get rid of all their good shows, so I don't place much faith in them.
