Hey Trekkers!

I am probably going to sound like a moron to all of you, and some of you might not believe me, but...

What is a lightyear? I mean through out Voyager, it's 70,000 light years from home, how big is a light year?

I feel like an idiot.

i am pretty sure that the closest star is 4.4 light years away, but maybe this is alpha proxima. 2.3 light years is wrong for the closest star, no star is that close.

Maybe you should check your facts. Proxima Centauri is the closest star to Earth after the Sun lying approximately 4.4 light-years away.

Proxima Centauri is 4.2 ly away.

Alpha Centauri is 4.3 ly away.

2.2 ly away is probably still in the Oort Cloud.

Use your imagination to fill in the gapes The light from the sun takes 8 minutes to reach planet Earth. How far would the light have gone in an hour? How far after a day? How far by a Month? Then multiply that distence by 12, and then by 70,000!!

The closest star to Earth, techically, is that big orange light in the sky which we musn't look at ........ the nearest star to our solar system is Alpha Centauri at 4.22 light years.

Back on the topic, a light year is 9.4605 times 10 to the power of 15 kilometers long, which is 63,240 Astronomical units.

Light years is indictive of how long it takes from one star to the next in a year. The actual speed is ALOT faster, like billions of kilometers per second.
