Okay I am doing a satire writing for my english class about a convention which accidentally put Star wars fans and Star Trek fans in the same room. Very funny but I need to know exactly what Light saber energy is. i remeber seeing or hearing about it from episode two and my friend Trem. But he's not on and I can't get ahold of him. SO any help would be appreciated.

Lightsaber energy is simple. Although it is a complex amout of gadgets in it the lightsaber runs of an energy pack, it's blade and color comes from being focused through a gem of some kind.

actually enacaed in the handle is a focusing cryatal usually 3 but some others have one. also there is a datinum power cell. the handle itself has 2 knobs, a blade length adjust, and a blade power adjust. there is a hand grip and a belt clip on the butt of the handle also.

^So far we have seen only Blue, Red, Green, Purple and Gold. It seems Red is the only color for the Dark Side Siths. It would be interesting to see Darth Sidius use a black one, but it would be near impossible to see, Unless, of coruse, he fights on Tattoine during the day.

i think your importance or status as a jedi determines the colour of you light saber, but as to how they work im sure there will be a huge number of websites that will tell you

actually the color is determined by the following. Those crystals I metioned earlier can either be made or found in certan locations. Somewhere I heard or read that the color of your blade is detirmined by the nature of the crystal you use in it.

Wrong. the color of the blade comes from the color of Gem or Crystal you used. also most Lightsabers have drop shut-offs. if a jedi lost touch contact with their lightsaber it would shut off. Also jedi have only 1 gem in their lightsabers.
not all Sith use Red gems or crystals for their lightsaber and yes there has been a black lightsaber.
Exar Kun, who was an ancient sith lord.
he had a nice double bladed black lightsaber. his main tactic was when a jedi side slashed he'd decrease the size of the one blade so the jedi would over rotate. then he'd kill the jedi.

^Didn't Vader throw his lightsabre at Luke in episode 6?
The stuff you mentioned is from books, it's not canon.

First off, Darth Vader didn't throw his lightsaber.
second. It is canon.
What happened to Obi-Wan's when he droped it to grab the ledge in Episode 1. What happened to Qui-Gon's after he droped it after being Stabbed by Darth Maul.
They went out. Each lightsaber Has a cut off switch when contact is lost with a person.

Go watch episode six. Luke is standing on a gondola above his father, telling Vader about how he can feel the good in him. Vader responds by saying that if Luke will not fight, then he will meet his destiny. Vader then throws his red lightsabre which hits off a post on the gondola while still lit up. Luke evades and falls down below the main floor. Vader then goes on to taunt his son, bringing up his sister in the process. The rest is history.
As far as the info from the book you've read being canon, I'll have to take you're word for it. I don't have access to the official Star Wars encycolpedia right now. But if you don't believe that Vader threw his lightsabre, perhaps you should check all of your info before making statements. Just a suggestion.

a light saber is a hand weapon from star wars, but i can't explain or would not even try to explain the tech involved (apart from the fact that star wars tech is usally unexplainable), i am only a trekkie

A white lightsaber would be quite good. I also read about Exar Kun before. I didn't know that his 'saber was black though.

Does anybody really care what canon is and is not? As long as the writing in the books is true to the movies it's fine to use as an explanation.

But it's like love or hate, now is that real or fake?
Cause it's a real thin line, but that's your choice to make.
The question at hand, help me understand, is this your plan?
I think I can, can I think, then I think I can.

^ Canon is far less important to the Star Wars universe than it is in the Star Trek universe. With only 5 feature films to date, there are a lot of holes that are filled thru the use of books.
On Trek, however, canon information is essential.

First off... If you people don't know about Force throws You shouldn't be posting here. Vader didn't THROW the lightsaber, He Force threw it. And Force throws and Regular throws ARE 2 VERY DIFFERENT THINGS!!Lightsaber Blades are Light, Which mean they Have NO Mass what so ever. The heaviest part of the lightsaber is where the energy pack is.. in Vader's case the bottom. Now an object spinning in a circle with it's main Weight being in the middle makes no sense in physics. The heaviest part wants to be on the outside NOT in the middle. A force throw is the only way that is possible.
