 Basically, Johnny Smith's brain was damaged in a car accident, leaving him in a coma for six years. He awakened abruptly, after his mind re-routed itself, so to speak. This left him with access to a portion of the human brain which is normally inactive in humans----his doctor terms it a "dead zone".
 
 This give him some psychic abilities. In particular, physical contact with things can give him visions of the future or the past in relation to that object or person.
 
 But there may be an as-yet-unrevealed force driving his visions.....
