"Far Beyond the Stars" is another example of DS9's ability to generate empathy and understanding for the storyline by giving us a plauisble, somewhat contemporary view on an issue, and then relate it to what's going on in the 24th century. Beyond that, "Far Beyond the Stars" teaches an important social lesson to those of us who did not live in a time of extreame racial prejudice.

I'm going to pull the fight posts out of the thread. If it weren't for the fact that you obviously know each other IRL, I'd slap the lot of you with flaming warnings.
Next time I will. If you're going to fight use PMs please.

Far Beyond the Stars is undoubtably one of the finest pieces of experamental Trek escapism that exists.
The concept was very interesting, the "Benny Russell fantasy" characters are slight composits of the real DS9 characters. Odo's alter ego is slightly racsist and stubborn, much like Odo and the Founder race in general. Quark's alter ego is looking out for himself, good at buisness (he weasals a raise from out of his boss,) yet is caring and looks out for hois friends. Kira's alter ego isw a strong female, yet she has to live through the oppression of women, much like Kira had to live through Cardassian oppression. Worf's alter ego is a warrior, a diffrent kind of warrior from Worf, but a warrior nontheless.
The episode had many interesting parallels. Some of the themes mirrored between the "DS9 universe" and the "Benny Russel universe" include the Dominion and the Cardassians oppressing the Federation, or the police and civic authority oppressing the African American. There is also the theme of the Prophets lending Sisko/Russel guidance and inspiration.
Apart from the characterisations and the themes, I think Far Beyond the Stars is a lot of fun to watch. I really enjoy it, its my second favorite episode of Deep Space Nine.
