Actually, according to a report by CNN Headline News, the Save Farscape campaign has grown bigger than the one to save the original Star Trek. Mostly this is due to the fact that they didn't have the internet back then.

Also, the outcry is because currently, the series *ends on a cliffhanger*. It would be like TNG being cancelled in the middle of Best of Both Worlds----except worse, because Farscape uses story arcs whereas TNG was mostly standalone episodes. The campaign's purpose is *either* to get a fifth season, or at least a two-hour telemovie to wrap up loose ends.

BTW, www.savefarscape.com has the info.

It does indeed look like Scifi won't be doing any more Farscape, you're right about that. However, both UPN and Showtime have expressed an interest in picking the show up------sort of the way TNT picked up a fifth season of Babylon 5 after WB cancelled it.

Wrong, SG-1 became the #1 watched show on Sci Fi Channel. They got rid of Farscape so they could keep SG1 for the 7th season.

Those are the facts.

I didn't say otherwise. Farscape was the #1 show on the Scifi channel *until* they got SG1, and then it became #2. That doesn't change that fact that Farscape is the longest-running original series they've ever had, *and* they had already agreed to a fifth season when they abruptly took an out clause and left it.

Look, as I said at the beginning of the thread, I never watched 'Scape so its not that big a deal to me. I'm just making sure people know what really happened.

As to whether there will be a seventh season of SG1, it depends on whether RDA wants to stay with it more than anything else. I don't think there's been an official announcement either way just yet, but I could be wrong.

And the fact that UPN and Showtime are interested is significant.

Well, good for Stargate. That's kind of irrelevant to this thread.

From Scifi's website:
Quote:
Q: Is it true that SCI FI cancelled Farscape in order to finance another season of Stargate SG-1?
A: No. Negotiations for the series are completely separate. The decision to end Farscape after season 4 was based solely on its ratings performance in relation to its high cost of production. Whether we do more episodes of Stargate or not has nothing to do with Farscape.

Apparently the ratings had gone down a little, to around 1.2. Which doesn't mean a lot-----for all we know, three people who happened to have Nielsen boxes stopped watching.

Hmmmm.....I just came across this. Excerpt from a chat with DK, one of TPTB of Farscape. The full transcript is here:
http://www.savefarscapecentral.com/cgi-bin/log.cgi?item=cl20020919_dk_froon

Quote:
>>I can't say if it was a quid pro quo, but when all of you and many other dedicated fans started voicing your displeasure at Farscape's cancellation we suddenly found ourselves in a re-opened negotiation with the SF Channel regarding more episodes.

So much for the good news. Can't make a show without the dollars and the commitment of the channel that airs you. Nothing changed really.

At the moment, there is no new eps of Farscape on the horizon.

But, a few thoughts...

First, what you have done/are doing is not wasted. It is good. Things change. Things move. Just not when you want them to sometimes.

Here's what I mean... Our best 11 eps of Farscape are coming up in January. Ben called me 2 nights ago after midnight. He and his family had just finished watching the finished version of 413. He couldn't believe that anyone would cancel this show.

(...)

Yep. Sets are down. Nope, not the end of the world.

(...)

I saw SF Channel's FAQ post. Somebody (over a dozen people) passed it on to me. Okay. I'd like to add a tiny bit of perspective to the situation. Just my informed opinion, you understand. Couldn't be . the truth. No way. Uh uh. Just an opinion, you understand...

Our ratings dropped for a variety of reasons. One is certainly the time slot move. We have direct competition in Odyssey 5 on Showtime. We've lost some people there. A few.

(...)

Every single 1/10 th point that we drop. Let's talk about it.

We dropped, what, on average? 2/10ths. Each 1/10 represents 3 people in America with a Neilson box. Three. Tres. So six people somewhere stopped watching or went somewhere else or went intoprolonged labor (labour for our friends in Oz and UK) and we're no longer a viable show.

I completely understand. We're also hurt by the community you've established amoung yourselves. You watch our show in groups. Clusters. Gaggles. Pods. The way it's meant to be shared. If you're alone -- you get online while it's on and share the experience. They don't count gaggles. Only singles. We should've made the damn show for 14 year old boys. Jeez, did we screw up.

(...)

We've lost some of Stargate's lead-in. We have. But "why. "

Perhaps the audiences are not a perfect overlap. (Where's Annabel when I need her to corrict my horendus spelng?) Anyway. The audience's are not exactly the same. (...) We've been waiting, but there was never a compatible show build to work with us. Fine. We all take what we get. But I personally -- PERSONAL OPINION, ONLY FOLKS --don't buy that as a reason to cite when trying to explain a cancellation.

(...)

I won't even talk about the marketing. I wish to remain a free man.

Lastly, re the FAQs -- despite all claims that we were all still negotiating\at the time when the sets were first going under the hammer--before the reprieve --We had received a cancellation letter. Thank you, but no more, thank you.

What to do?

Well -- sets can be rebuilt. We've photographed themand have all the blueprints. No biggie.

Rock and I are working on "a script." We all have 22 episodes of what might have been the final season of Farscape-- it COULD have gone longer if you gaggles had just each sat alone in your own rooms and watched the show without going into labor/labour. Anyway. They're the best damn eps you will hopefully someday get to see. Why? Why are they so good? I'll tell you why...

Several reporters and commentators have hit on this. We know it. YOU know it in your soul. I think there are some --good gracious, this is the first time I've ever typed these letters since I used to BE one of 'em --TPTB's that don't get it. Even now. The unwritten 22 eps of Scape are the best because they are THE END OF THE DAMN STORY. It's why we've all worked and watched so hard. To see the end. Someone in the LA times wrote --and it was forwarded to me by a sympathetic syndicated columnist --that you wouldn't got to a movie if they didn't show you the end. You wouldn't buy the next novel if the last 100 pages were torn out. But, I swear to you...Certain TPTB's think this is just a show with a bunch of eps strung together in a row. It's a single story. A love story. Multiple love stories woven together into a careful tapestry. You DO NOT understand how hard we've all worked to make that satisfying for you -- despite a few glitches. However -- we're even proud of the glitches. I immodestly think -- along with the rest of the cast and crew --that our cretins are better than most others' swans.

Hey! You guys got some cash? I love the ads. We love the ads. You are so wonderful and nice. Save the money. Let it earn interest in the bank.

We come on in Jan. Last 11 eps. Wait till you see. Wait till everyone sees. Take ads then. Remind the world. It'll be hard to miss us unless they run us at 3:37 am out of a broadcast station in Rhodesia.

Spread the word. No labor/labour then. Watch alone. Be 14. But, as Ben says --"Get us a 2. 0 rating." Then smile.

I promise you, the people who make Farscape are ready to make more. Maybe we'll get the chance. Maybe YOU will give us that chance.

(...)

This is not smoke. I'm too tired and old to blow smoke. Ratings rise. Noise is made. February rolls around... I'm actually -- really - - smiling. I'd love to see it happen. It would also mean it happened because of you. Come to think of it --This whole damn thing has happened because of you. You get it. You know it's one story. A love story. An epic, frelling love story.

Personally, I am really sad. It wouldn't've been that hard to let the story finish.

Anyway...Thank you all. I will expect our paths will cross on the airwaves in the future. In the meantime- -Keep watching Farscape. In record numbers. Stay with the story. Ben and Ricky and all the others and myselfare not dead yet. We're just unemployed.

Thank you all for the last 4 plus years. It is now time for us to step back. Stay a community. Maintain your Farscape friends. We're in the process of doing that ourselves. It is a comfort and a blessing. Look at all the cool things Mr. O'Bannon's little brainstorm did for all of us.

Good night from Sydney. DK out.<<

Howcome I have missed this topic for soo long, and that when it's even sticky
Anyway, yes, many questions got answered there Lindley.
I think that the biggest problem with farscape was the time of broadcast move and the storyline. When missing 2 or 3 eps of FS you realy have to try hard and figure things out. The series changes too quickly, almost like the storyline is a rushed one and there are ahrdly any stand alnone episodes. I love farscape, my favourite series at this moment. Really I don't want to see this show end without an ending.......it would realy stuff things up. Maybe I should see if there's any books available.........

Well, to figure out farscape you'll have to watch from season 1, otherwise it's confusing like hell. I didn't so I took the alternative and that was to download every episode from the kazaa network. So I am up to date now, ready for the next episode..........and I really hope we get one
