I dont no alot about there warp stuff but I was also confused when the did just give up on warp 10 but later it was a little understandible considering what happened to tom

What hapenned to tom was counteracted by the doctor later, so I doubt that was the real reason why they quit. As I understand from what I read. It is not controllable to end up when in warp 10. Warp ten is only a transition stage. When gone through the barrier you'll reach warp 11 etc etc etc.
In order to get beyond warp 9.99 one needs a transwarp drive like the borg have. The *beep* was equipped with a experimental transwarp drive. Warp 10 is still a barrier for the normal warp drives since for those one would need an unlimited ammount of energy to break through.

in any episodes of any star trek series...has any ship exceded warp 10 or 11?
