Well I'm not a huge TOS fan so I could be mistaken but didnt the Bird of Prey drop a nuclear "device" into some debris..the debris lured the Enterprise closer and it detonated or something....it's that long since I saw that episode lol...I think i read it in "Ship of the Line" as well.

The phase pistols they use have two settings "stun" and "kill" or so it says in Broken Bow.
