PostThu Sep 05, 2002 3:37 pm    I Don't Like Books

I don't like the Star Trek books much.

You can adapt a book to T.V and make it interesting but not vice versa.

Star Trek books just don't appeal to me cause they're boring.

I'm sorry but that's just the way i feel

There are over 400 ST books out right now. I think you'll find not all of them are boring, though some certainly are.

If you're a DS9 fan, you'll find "A Stich in Time", the Millenium trilogy, and the DS9 Relaunch (starting with "Avatar") are all excellent. Some of the Voyager book hilights are the Dark Matters trilogy. Which series is your favorite?

The thing is, books tell different kinds of stories than TV. If you were to write a book the same way the TV shows are written (and some Trek books are like this), then yes, it would be very boring. But if you capture the capabilities of books, then they make for great reading.

Personally I think you must want to read the book to enjoy it. If you think the cover or back of the book looks boring I don't think you enjoy it as much..hmmm i dont seem to b makin sense.whats new?

That wasn't nice.......some forums would give you a warning for flaming for that post. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt for now, though......

You haven't made a point. You've stated an opinion. You're allowed the hold that opinion, but its not a point unless you can back it up with specific evidence.

Beware, I'm getting a little nitpicky now. Don't take it personally, I'm just stating facts.

Its impossible to argue that Trek books are boring unless you've read them all. You could argue that some are boring, but not all of them. You could say you don't like the printed format, but not that the books are inherantly bad. Please elaborate on exactly which books you didn't like-----its quite possible I'll agree with you *on those books*. However, I can think of several Trek books which have been significantly better---in my opinion---than most episodes of Trek.

"Well it's good to know we're appreciated"...Well I suppose your entitled to your opinion. It's just a shame you can't back it up with any valid reason. Sure their are some terrible trek books, for instance "Warped" but there are some really good ones...esspecially like Lindley says the Avatar series and the rest of the DS9 relaunch. Unless you have read them all I wouldn't say that they are all boring. As a matter of fact how many have you actually read?

All the books I've read, I've enjoyed, they have a different sort of feel from episodes, that's why I like them.

^ Yeah, sometimes.

I also find that in a lot of books that have good storylines, the writers go overboard with discription, and in the first like 8 chapters, nothing's really happened, and then they plunge right into the story. They are still good books, but still.....

Yeah I have found that in many books as well...they spend about 2 pages describing the fabric of someone's clothes and then in the next chapter they are talking about the action scenes in very brief detail which are covered in about half a page......if you know what I mean I can't really explain it....lol....they are still good....but could be better...on the other hand some are really good....I have to admit though I do not like Diane Carey's style of writing...esspecially in the novels of episodes such as "Equinox"...I thought her book "ship of the line" was one of the best I have read funnily enough...just the televised novels (what's the word) I don't like...

I don't think Michael Jan Friedman is very good, I read Crossover 7 times and it still was no good.

The Q books are good though...

I think that was the only book I have renewed from the library so that I can finish it in about 5 years!

Oh, and I can see what you mean in regard to MJF. He's written some good stuff, but his newest books, the Stargazer series, are kinda bland.

My favorite Trek authors are Peter David, Greg Cox, an LA GRAF.

Which reminds me, try "The Eugenics Wars, book 1" sometime. Its excellent. It has a few small parts with Kirk, but most of it is in the 20th century, following Gary Seven, Roberta Lincoln, and Kahn.

I didn't think Crossover was the best either...there seemed to be a stage where there seemed to be a load of TNG books coming out and each one had either Spock, Kirk (I thought he was dead already?), McCoy and Scotty but particularly Kirk and Spock....maybe it's just me...but The Eugenics Wars is really good, I wonder when Book 2 comes out in paperback?btw another really good book (in my opinion) is "The Battle of Betazed".

The Battle of Betazed is good, but that was one of the ones I thought went a little over the top with description, but still a good book.

I liked Crossover, I think MJF wrote it quite well. JMO.

I've only seen one of the Eugenics Wars books in my local shop, if I see them both together, I might get them, they sound good.

Kirk isn't dead quite yet. He was resurrected by alien technology controlled by a Borg/Romulan alliance in "The Return", by William Shatner and J&G Reeves-Stevens.

Do plots in books incorporate themselves into the actual Star Trek timeline or is there some sort of religious sect here that nobody's told me about???

I hate it when I miss one of those!

The way books work is that they must be consistent with all Trek shown onscreen up to that point. Stuff which is onscreen later can contradict them----and sometimes does. The vast majority of Star Trek books do not take any other books into "canon", so sometimes books contradict each other.

However, in some special cases, a series of books will form in which the previous books in the series, and certain other books, are considered canon. For instance, the New Frontier series with Captain Calhoun and the crew of the Excalibur. There's 14 books in the series so far----11 numbered books, one part of the Double Helix miniseries, one from the Captain's Table miniseries, and one from the Gateways miniseries. That means that by extension, all the other books in those miniseries can be considered to take place in the same "universe" as the New Frontier series.

Another example is the DS9 Relaunch. It uses characters created in the first books (the Avatar duology) and tells their story, along with the remaining DS9 crew from the show. Incidentally, it also has an entry from the Gateways miniseries, so *technically* it takes place in the same "universe" as New Frontier as well. I suppose that also links them with the Challenger series, though that seems to have been cut short.

The Kirk resurrection thing is part of the Shatnerverse, as its commonly called. A series of books written by William Shatner with J&G Reeves-Stevens, it starts with The Ashes of Eden, continues with The Return, then Avenger. Then it has the mirror universe trilogy, Spectre, Dark Victory, and Preserver.

It is widely held that the Shatnerverse is not technically part of the "real" Star Trek universe, but that doesn't stop it from being great reading (IMO).
